RWF 3rd Battallion Service Records
Hello, I am new to this web site and hoping that someone will be able to help me.
One of my ancestors was in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 3rd Battallion and was a 2nd Lieutenant in 1887.
I am trying to find his service record and have been to the National Archives this morning who only have the 1st battallions records and not the 3rd's.
Can any one please advise where these records would be held?
I have looked on the Royal Fusiliers Museum website in (museum in Wales) and they seem to indicate that they have a lot of records but that the service records are held else where. Unfortunately they don't seem to say where!
Please can any one help?
Many thanks
best wishes
Sheri

Hi Sherri, welcome to the Forum. Firstly can you post the details of your ancestor. Some of our members have access to muster rolls etc.
I always assumed that muster rolls were held at Kew, Im not so sure whether there would have been service records at that time. If we can identify him, its possible we might be able to track his service.

Re: RWF 3rd Battallion Service Records
Hi,
My ancestor was William Henry George Poulett who was born 1870 in London.
On the 1891 census he says that he was in the R.W.I (Army) and the only record I have ever found is on the findmypast.com site which has a Militia Infantry record for the Royal Welsh Fusliers, 3rd Battalion stating that he was a 2nd Lieutenant on the 7th April 1887, one week after his 17th birthday.
In 1901 the census says he was "living on own means" and I do not know if this means that he was no longer in the Army at that point.
Any suggestions of where I can obtain his service records (if they exist) would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks and best wishes

Re: RWF 3rd Battallion Service Records
Hi Sherri
I would imagine that "Living on his own Means" would indicate he was no longer serving, and perhaps had another income, perhaps from his family.
He should be listed on the Muster Rolls at Kew. Officers records tend to be more readily available than other ranks.

In addition all Officers details are contained within The Army Lists held at Kew. They can also be purchased on CD Rom from Ebay for a couple of pounds. A guide to what is available is contained at the link below:

Re: RWF 3rd Battallion Service Records
Hello,
Thank you for your links. I did spend a couple of hours at Kew last Saturday but found nothing. The odd thing is that there are no records at Kew at all for the 3rd battalion, even the lady who helped me found that odd. I had a look through the index cards and found his Grandfather who was in a different regiment all together but nothing for him.
It's so frustrating but looks like I have hit a brick wall that refuses to be knocked down!
But I think you are right when you say that he may not have been in the army by 1901. The family story is that he was given some money and went to Ceylon and became a tea planter. From 1901 he simply disappears.. I was relying on his service record with a clue as to what happened to him.
Oh well, back to the drawing board!
Many thanks again for your help. It's much appreciated.
