How does one obtain (if possible) a copy of a Citation for A Mention In Despatches on 1939-45 War Medal.

I don't think there are any recommendations for WWII MIDs. There will be a London Gazette entry though.

Agree with Lars. The only trouble is the Gazette will not give you the full citation. One of my Uncles received an MID in Korea and the Gazzete entry was nothing like the Citation. Perhaps Richard or Al can "step up to the plate" for you.

Thanks to you all.

The paper work that a workmate gave me shows a Medal entitlement and is signed OIC REME records. His army number is 7593025 though the first number (hand written) may be a letter. Staff Sergeant S.G. Cooke Royal Army Ordnance Corps. There is a copy with coat of Arms and signed by the Sec of State for War stating By The KINGS'S order the name of etc as above.. was published in the London Gazette on 15 December 1942 as mentioned in a Despatch for distinguished service. The lad has all the medals but asked me if there was a way to find out why he had been mentioned. I told him I wasn't sure if a citation was given but promised I would try to find out. I have located the Gazette for the date but could not find the entry.

If the chap is family he should try and get his service papers from Glasgow.

Will cost him £30, but at the end of the day, a small price to pay for family history.

Keep us posted Gwyn, it will be interesting to see what he won it for....My bet....North Africa....although Madagascar was ongoing!!!!

Al he does have the Africa Star Feb 1942, Burma Star Oct 1942, 1939-45 Star, Italy Star Oct 1944, War Medal 39-45 with Oak leaf and Defence Medal. Against the Defence Medal description it states Silver Laurel leaves (Kings Commendation for Brave Conduct- something cant read the copy, maybe Citation. Busy chap wasn't he? Finished up WO1
