Pass out Parade - ITC Catterick 06 Feb 09

On Friday 06 February 09, a Pass out Parade was held at ITC Catterick.

    15 Soldiers passed out into the Regiment, the breakdown is as follows;

    4 Soldiers to 1 R WELSH
    11 Soldiers to 2 R WELSH

This is a bit disproportionate to the agreed 40%/60% split, however it will even out during the year.

    Well done to all.

    Karl Roberts
    RSM
    3 R WELSH

None of them are "proper Royal Welch". They have all joined the Royal Welsh and probably have no idea what RWF and RRW means. They join their Battalions ready for future operations and not living in the past.

    Lets move on.

I was saying well done to all of them but correct me if im wrong but each of the Royal Welsh Bn's have distinct names

1st Bn Royal Welsh (The Royal Welch Fusiliers)
    and
2nd Bn Royal Welsh (The Royal Regiment of Wales)

I do oppologise for spelling the last welsh with a C rather than a S
but i did spell it with a C for 24 years sorry

    Karl,

Are recruits taught Regimental History at Catterick, or are they taught within Bn's?

    Roger,

All recruits are taught Regimental History in Catterick and how they became ROYAL WELSH soldiers. They all learn about VC's from all the antecedent Regiments and also learn about Regimental traditions of all Battalions.

When they get to their respective Battalions, they will learn the slight change in traditions perculiar to that Battalion.

Crucially recruits dont know which Battalion they will join until the latter end of training, unless they have specific reason to join that Battalion ie a family member serving.

    Karl

I have to agree with Karl on this one, they are both joining the Royal Welsh, and I think I am right in saying they could be moved from Battalion to Battalion if required for operational needs. They are new to the battalions and as Karl rightly says they may have no idea in the difference between the two, when do we ever here of the 1st and 2nd battalions refered to by their correct titles???? I know it upsets a lot of people but like it or not there are three battalions with the title Royal Welsh, we still have our identity with the comrades and the title of the 1st Battalion, I think all three battalions need our support in looking to the future rather than dwelling on the past, lifs life, things change. I dont belive in father xmas anymore, but I got over it??? Just building my defence position.. Fire away chaps,

I think that the lads from North Wales should go to the 1Bn (RWF) firstly. As the RRW use recruit from South Wales. Where the RWF recruited from North & South

As I have worked in recruiting for a while and work closely with my opposite number who is a WO2 in Maindy formerly of RRW fame and his boys. We are a single unit now and work hard together to achieve the same aim. Young men join the Army firstly understanding they will leave home and travell especialy in this day and age and more importantly they know very little in most cases of our individual history so geographicaly it no longer matters. We are the Royal Welsh consisting of two Battalions and recruits successful in passing out will join the Battalion most in need of them in order to deploy on operations. Those of us with memories of how it was are just that.
