    Looking for my Taid

    Hi all,
Im looking for my mums dad who weve never met. I do have a marraige certificate, but Im getting no luck and fed up of buying time on the sites to view documents which are non productive, so, does anyone have access to files to give me a start. I can provide name, age (yrs) when married, Sgt in the R.A. etc.
If anyone can give me a starting point, I'll be eternally grateful. I can then send scan of certificate.
    regards
    Dai

Pass the details Dai, I will have a look on Ancestry. You will still need to purchase the certificates though. They are about £7.00 a pop.

    Re: Looking for my Taid

    Dai has passed the details.

Attached is the marriage cert of:

George William Berry. He got married on Boxing Day 1930, he was aged 38(poss birth year 1892/3).

He was living at the Drill Hall at Saundersfoot nr Tenby. His occupation is given as Sgt RA

His late father was a railway worker, although I cannot make out all the occupation detail on the cert.

Dai knows that George was in the RA in the Great War. He believes he was gassed, and may have received a pension. Its possible he may have settled at some point at Popham.

Dai, do you have any idea of where he was born, is it perhaps noted on your Mum's birth Cert.

    Re: Looking for my Taid

    Hi Dai,

Have details of a George William Berry b. Poplar in Jan-Mar qtr of 1893
    ref: 1c page 624

I believe I also have him on the 1901 census, now living in Walthamstow
His parents are listed as : George S. and Eileen ages 33 and 31.

George S. is listed as a detectiver Sergeant G.E.R. which is the railway, so looks like this could be the correct family.
He is however listed as being 10 years old, but often mistakes are made on these retruns.
If this is the correct family, he had quite a few siblings:
    Albert 7, Fredk.6 , Maud E. 4, Daisy 3, Lilly 2 and May E. 1yrs.

If this looks correct I will happily copy out the census form and send it over to you.
    cheers
    Pat

    Re: Looking for my Taid

Dai, searching a different way I have found another George living in Poplar in 1901 who has an age nearer the correct one. His father is listed as Thomas age 64 and widowed. But his occupation is listed as dock ;labourer.
He hs 3 siblings, thomas, Beatrice and what looks like Alma .
    Does this look as possible??

    Re: Looking for my Taid

I think Patty may be "on the money" with her first hit. The railway link is compelling, and we already know his dad had the same name. I would be applying for that birth certificate Dai.

On Ancestry website, there are quite a few George Berrys listed in the Military Pensions/Service Records. This will take a little while to trawl through. Because he continued serving after the war, his Service Records will be held by the MOD, you will be able to apply for them. But I think you will need a service number.

If he received a small temporary pension after he was gassed(many did), his Pension record Just might be included in ancestry's archive. I will pass you my Ancestry details, you can then trawl through the George Berry's, listed under Pension Records. What you are looking for on the records is mention of the NOK...ie his dad, George Berry or the mother as identified by Patty. Any probs, give me a shout. If you find any possibles, save them to my shoebox, and I will have a look. Have Fun!!! Keep us posted
