    Before Endeavours Fade

This book is an absolute must for planners of a tour of the Western Front. It was written by the late Rose Coombs MBE. Themarked maps along with their rout cards are very informative, she gives details you miss onthe ground. I for one never go across without it. It is published by Battle of Britain Prints International Ltd ISBN0 900913 85 1

    Re: Before Endeavours Fade

I'm pleased to see that the book is still going strong as I worked in the next-door office to Rosie Coombs for about five years. A formidable lady in her way, but a true expert on the Great War. Her ashes were buried at her request in the Ramparts at Ypres, having passed away a few years after she retired from the Imperial War Museum. That her wish was granted was a measure of the respect accorded her by the Belgian authorities, as it would not normally have been allowed.

I believe that newer editions of "BEF" (a deliberate pun on her part) are still appearing, so hopefully the legacy of her work will improve as time goes on and still more people become interested in the Great War.
