Re: Royal Welch 'Superstars'
Jack Hawkins wore his RWF tie in the film 'League of Gentleman' but as film is in b & w it does not show up as such.
Desmond Llewellyn, Q in the Bond films, was also RWF.

Another sporting hero:
Johnny Basham
John Michael Basham was born in Newport in 1890 and came to Wrexham in 1912 as a recruit to the Royal Welch Fusiliers.
He was stationed at the Barracks in Wrexham for many years and attained the rank of sergeant. However it was for his boxing career that he became famous with the Wrexham public and he became known as "The Happy Warrior". Several of his bouts were held at the Barracks or the Drill Hall in Poyser Street.
In 1914 he defeated Johnny Summers for the Welterweight title which he held until 1920. In 1916 Johnny became the first Welterweight Champion to win the newly installed Lonsdale Belt and shortly afterwards he won the European Championship. He later moved up to Middle Weight where he also became European Champion winning the title in 1921. Whilst in Wrexham he lived with his family in Whitegate Road, close to the Barracks and he was managed by Alderman William Dodman. During his career he had 91 professional fights, winning 68 and drew 6. He died in 1947.

Re: Royal Welch 'Superstars'
after reading this what an achievment, any one know how the other person got on?
In 1809, Captain Robert Barclay of the Regiment of Royal Welch Fusiliers accepted a wager of 1000 guineas to walk or run 1000 consecutive miles in 1000 consecutive hours. He succeeded, setting an endurance record which stands to this day and became a rich man as a result.
Now, 194 years later, six intrepid athletes will attempt to go one step further than Barclay, not only completing 1000 miles but also running the London Marathon at the end. And following in the footsteps of his Regimental forefather is Second Lieutenant David Lake, who came through a tough selection process to win the chance to beat the record and raise money for the Army Benevolent Fund.
Scientists at QinetiQ’s defence research laboratories have been enlisted to prepare David for the immense task ahead, advising him on fitness, diet and coping with sleep deprivation – a major problem for all the competitors. They will adopt the ‘Barclay Method’ for the challenge, tackling two miles together at the end and beginning of two consecutive one-hour periods, then resting for about 90 minutes before doing the next two miles, and so on.
The challenge takes place along the route of the London Marathon, which the six contenders will complete 38 times over. Each will be accompanied by their own support teams and a tour bus, where they will rest and eat for the entire 41 days.
Amongst the other competitors are Paul Selby, a veteran of 440 marathons, Sharon Gayter, one of the world’s top five female ultra-distance runners, and Lloyd Scott, famous for completing the London and New York marathons in full deep-sea diving gear.
The challenge begins on Sunday 2 March 2003 and culminates with the Flora London Marathon on 13 April. Watch this space for live progress updates, and please visit the Army Benevolent Fundwebsite to find out how to make a donation.

How about Fus Simon Melia, D Coy, Ternhill, left the army, went to prison, took acting lessons from the daughter of the Marquis of Queensbury, married her.
The last time I saw him he was playing a baddie on The Dream Team, the SKY soap about a football team.
Has anyone seen him on anything since? Apart from the documentary where he got caught sleeping with the aupair!! But we won`t mention that eh Simon:winker:
