Enclosed is a photo of Joseph Green, born 12 Apr 1840 at Cottage Row, Smith's Building, Well Street, Birmingham.

In the 1850s he lived in Gt Francis Street, Duddeston, Aston and married Mary Ann Silk living in Gt Francis Street, in 1870.

By 1891 he was a Sergeant in Brecon and he was in the South Wales Borderers.

Do you think we could find out any more about the chap by putting it on the RWF website or similar to see what we can glean

I would advise contacting the SWB museum at Brecon. Im sure they would have an interest in the picture. They will also conduct a search for about £15

I can start the ball rolling. A friend has checked 'The Silver Wreath' the 24th at Isandhlwana & Rorkes Drift, which contains amongst the rolls for the 1st & 2nd Bns 24th Foot, the Chard & Bourne' Muster Rolls, this chaps name is not present.

Admittedly not great news - but good for the process of elimination.

He seems to appear in the 1881 census as a "Pensioner Orderly Room Clerk of the Royal SWB Militia" with 4 sons and his wife Mary Ann. And in the 1891 census as a Qtr Master Sergeant of the SWB and by the 1901 census as an "Army pensioner clerk".

A friend has brought to my attention a medal that was recently sold via a medal dealer. This COULD be the right chap ... more work needed to see if there were more than one Joseph Green serving in the Regiment at that time.

Clasp ‘1879’ (724. Pte J. Green. 1-24TH Foot.). Joseph Green, it should be noted was best man at the wedding of William Adam's.
Joseph Green was born in early 1842. Aged 18 years he enlisted for the 1st Battalion 24th Foot. He re-engaged to complete service while stationed at Malta 21 March 1869. Still serving he received his medal and clasp 1879 in early 1881. See also “The Noble 28TH” for entry and verification. This medal together with the one to William Green (1854 Private killed at Isandhlwana) were acquired privately, acquired in South Wales from the same home. It should also be noted that Joseph Green was best man at William Adam’s wedding and both were photographed together being close friends during and following the Zulu war.

Williams details recorded were :

William Green was born in 1850. Aged 18 years he enlisted for the 1st Battalion 24th Foot for limited engagement 15 July 1868. Prior to serving in South Africa he was stationed on St. Helena with “H” Company. While stationed at King William’s Town South Africa still with “H” Company he re-engaged to complete service 14 Sept. 1878. On 22 January 1879 he was KILLED IN ACTION at Isandhlwana. His effects were claimed by his father who also took delivery of his medal and clasp 1877-8-9.
