Death of Captain RG Jones late Welch & RRW
It is with great regret that we must announce the death of Captain (Retired) RG (Ron) Jones late WELCH and RRW on New Year’s Eve at the aged of 80 from pancreatic cancer. Born in 1942 at Kenfig Hill, South Wales, he was commissioned from Mons Officer Cadet School into the Welch Regiment in 1963.
He commanded 70 Army Youth Team in Maindy Barracks between 1967 and 1969, returning to 1 RRW on amalgamation where he was the Regimental Signals Officer on operational tours in Belfast in 1971/1972. He was then posted to 1 RWF.
A keen sportsman, he represented the battalion at rugby, cricket and hockey.
While Ron had the potential for a most successful military career, he decided to leave the army in 1974 to become a personnel officer with Coutts Bank in London, eventually rising to be their Pensions Manager. On final retirement at 65, he remained as a trustee of the Bank's pension fund.
After this Ron devoted his time to his family and his local church. He was also the proud owner of two debentures in the rugby stadium in Cardiff for many years, hardly ever missing a home international. He remained very close to those he had grown up with in the Welch Regiment and was always a great source of information to Regimental Headquarters on individuals of the Welch Regiment.
Letters of condolence can be sent to
