Gwyn,
Your favourite pop star is dead at the age of 50. What will you do now?
Just like the Rehab thread, everyone needs to take care of themselves because you never know when it is going to catch up with you.

Strangely enough Dilwyn Bach, I dont actually have ONE album of his in my CD collection (or vinyl come to think of it) Please no "Whats Vinyl" jokes. Like him or loathe him, he has made his mark and history will record him as the King of Pop. Unlike my real music Idol who is a "KING" and for me, has never left the building.
Love him or hate him,the guy was a legend a very sad day for not only the music industry, but also his worldwide fans.
Rest in peace.

it,s a sad day a legend has died king of pop has passed away despite what he as done in the past there is no taking it away the bloke he was one of the best but what you have to remember is to look after yourself as well we are all getting older and wiser you never know it could be round the corner rip my friend
Just think we all sort of grew up with him in our lives. Its just a shame that he could not lead a normal life from an early age like us. God Bless Him
It always amazes me how the press stoke things up as if everyone is supposed to be in mourning. Didn't like his music at all. He was part of the process that turned decent soul into some sort of awful souly, funk, disco garbage. So musically, as already pointed out he might have been regarded as king of pop but he only influenced perpetrators of even worse music. I have heard the event that his death has become compared to that of John Lennon. Equally overrated and only an influence on those wanting to sound like him but ended up sounding even worse.(Oasis???-dreadful) The Beatles at best were just a pop group.
Elvis had one of the greatest voices ever but I wouldn't call him an influence either (but he is called that), its like calling Pavarotti an influence. Now Buddy Holly?? Well that is another story. Total genius and that was a massive loss to the world.
Maybe this will turn into a musical opinions thread??
I suppose he was like a jar of Marmite. You either loved him or hated him! One thing I will point out is the album "Thriller" (produced by Quincy Jones) is the biggest selling album to date!
His earlier stuff sounded good - first heard it at the depot when I was 17 - but could take it or leave it thereafter. I wouldn't put him in the-
'where were you when you first heard the news' like when Kenedy or Elvis died but he did his bit for entertaing us so yeh, rest in peace Mike.
Nick: bet your'e a secret moon walker...
Dilwyn: keep taking the pills buddy.
well i do'nt know about ''king of pop '' but he was certainly a good entertainer and will be missed by many. however he is just one of many great singers who have sadly gone from us ( i dont rate lennon among them ) and i agree with griff029 that the greatest loss was Buddy Holly his music was briliant and even sounds good today.
however, sadly,it seems like this is another case,as with elvis, of misuse of perscription drugs which should be a lesson for anyone who has to take regular quantities of medication.
Interesting that the Beatles and Elvis Presley are not considered to be influential as in the "Rock and Roll hall of fame's 500 songs that have shaped Rock and Roll" The Beatles head the group with 7 (including solo's-Paul and John) followed by Elvis Presley with 6. Buddy Holly was drafted to the Hall of fame and was indeed influential as admitted by The Beatles among many others. His career only lasted a year and a half however due to his early and untimely death, and therefore it would be impossible to predict the longevity of his style of music. Ask any teenager, who were the Beatles or Elvis Presley they will probably know. Ask the same of Buddy Holly and I doubt you get as many positive responses. To say that John Lennon was not influential - (Imagine and Give Peace a Chance) is a bit off the mark. Michael Jackson is also there with 4 but there are none for Buddy Holly.
He Should not of been going so fast!
No really as a singer and entertainer he was class, but as a person he was disgusting a sad freek carnt say I will miss him, his music stays as does with most lost entertainers.
I guess cremation is out of the question-the burning plastic will destroy the ozone layer!
Sympathetically Barry :)
any for the wurzles gwyn , now theres class
made i wanna jump of ye sugar loaf mate
Imagine and Give Peace a Chance were pretty dire. Imagine particularly made me want to top myself. Hall of Fame is no indication of greatness.=, neither are sales. McCartney's offerings are partcularly painful and the worst of all is that 'Girl is Mine' with Michael jackson (on the overrated Thriller album I believe).
Weren't the Wurzels from Somerset????
So pray tell how is "greatness" in music measured? No the Wurzels were not from Somerset-they ARE from Somerset.
The Martin Bashir film 'living with Michael Jackson' was the beginning of the end, up until then everyone just knew he was weird.
this is my own response to griff,s posts
Remember, music is like artwork (paintings), what some people call fantastic, others will call ****. Just ask Vincent VG.... ohh! you can't he's dead as well.
Many people's tastes are very different and no one person can judge to say what they like is the best. It's only YOUR opinion.
Many very talented people are ... shall we say... a little strange and MJ was certainly very odd but he did wonders for the music industry. You can't knock him for that.
I must admit, I can watch "Thriller" for hours.
Please don't anyone ask Gwyn to talk about his Gary Glitter or Bay City Rollers collections.
Ha Ha brill, ok then lets go for it. Do I think waco Jako is a pervert??? not proved so cant comment Really. Do I think he was an artist at what he did? YES, first album, Jackson 5 ABC, my brother brought back from hong kong, Thats when I became hooked on his music, are the beatles
, John Lenon, or any other artist as good as him? that is a public opinion, like some one as already said THRILLER BEST SELLING ALBUM of all time, before all these allegations did you not all dance to his music in a mess function.
This person entertained us for years, like I said still not proved he did anything wrong, in my opinion its like OC Orders your guilty until proven innocent? should be the other way if you get my meaning
RIP MJ
Hear Hear Bruv,
What Ever the Scandals or allegations against the man. like Elvis the man was an entertainer (like "old Farts" listening to " The Boss" IE and Franz Ferdinad) They will all go down as legends.
As Dilwyn is trying to make me out to be the most musically inept person that he has had the misfortune to meet, I may as well admit to my favourite song ever: A Whiter Shade Of Pale by Procol Harum. Not a band associated with "Greatness" but what a classic. Whats yours lads and lasses??
Will 38,great response to Griffs post, most probably lives in a flat on his own no TV,Video etc,and probably a bay city roller fan,and screams at all the kids for playing football outside his flat,Michael Jackson a legend beyond belief how can you compare Buddy Holly with him, stop picking on Gwyn guys a Royal Welch Legend, come on Gwyn post us a tune.Anyway lets respect a dead man,yes there is good and bad in everyone including us,but this guy is a true legend, and will live forever.
Come on Griff respond to this.

I am just watching Tom Jones on one of the stages at Glastonbuty. He has been singing all his hits and the crowd have been very responsive. He is over sixty now and he still has his following and still does the 'hip swinging' like he used to.
On the other hand, and I'm not having a go, but Mr Jckson had not appeared on a stage for a number of years. I know that he was alot more popular than Sir Tom, but he did not fair well over the last few years (his court cases and loss of Gracelands). However, he will be remembered as a magic singer and not a silly man.
God rest you Michael Jackson.
I saw Mr. Jones too - he rocked !!
Roger when did MJ purchase Elvis's Pad? LOL
Ooops, so where did he live, can see the pad and the fun fair.
Neverland (just around the corner from me most of the time Rog)
I have been off the forum for a while and it would appear that my post has been edited. I do apologise if I have upset the sensibilities of some. My comments about the music were clearly my personal opinion. As is the opinion of 5s regarding the music and worth of Buddy Holly. 38, I haven't had the pleasure of your response to my post as it seems to have disappeared. Rest assured that it wouldn't have offended me in the slightest. I did notice that it had more 'thanks' things than mine so it was obviously popular and I may have inadvertently stumbled across the MJ fan club thread.
5s, I do not live in a flat. I have a TV that allows me to view some excellent music on Jools and the great offerings on BBC4 which has good music generally and is usually MJ free (mercifully). I also like to watch live music. Iron Maiden, Rush, Opeth, Nightwish, Ralph McTell, GooGoo Dolls, Arena. I enjoy going to see live music with my wife. I do not moan at the kids next door playing football. I wish they would make less noise and I certainly wish they would pollute the air with revolting barbeque stench.
It is me in fact who is told to turn the music down as my wife doesn't think that the neighbours should be subjected to Led Zeppelin, Motorhead, Metallica, Floyd, Genesis (just the early stuff as I am sure you agree that they went downhill after Gabriel and Hackett left), Wagner, Beethoven, Simon and Garfunkel, Dream Theatre, Elbow, Razorlight et al.
My issue was never really with MJ but, as I said earlier, with the press who whip this sort of thing up into a 'we are all in mourning' frenzy.

Griff, the post from 38 has not been edited out, scroll to the bottom of the post- see Smiley-that is the response accurate and hilarious I thought. Wonder if you might answer my question in my last post. (or perhaps it was edited out) How do you measure greatness in music if you dismiss the "official" listings? Your post gives a who's who's in music and your preferred taste/s, and I wonder where you get the time to listen to the Legend that is Buddy Holly. By the way, when you are teaching History, do you follow the curriculum or just teach the bits that You believe to be factual or the most exciting? LOL . Rock on.
Thanks Gwyn,
I did wonder whether that was it. The question about greatnes I took to be rhetorical. I certainly don't think we can take sales as an obvious indicator or we would then have to regard Big Brother or Coronation St as great TV which they aren't. It is an opinion thing I guess.
As far as teaching. We do have a curriculum to follow but as I wrote our last scheme of work, a lot of what I do is what I fancy. I do constantly remind the students that historians don't just read history, they rewrite it.
I will return later. This is fun.

Griff,
Please dont take my comments to heart, was having a bit of fun,you know me always been one for a laugh and joke, and there was always going to be a bit of a challenge on this topic, but lighthearted hopefully,
Myself and wife went to see take that in Cardiff recently and they were fantastic, says it all about my music choice.
Anyway take care and best of luck.

Personally I was more gutted at the passing of Frarah Fawcett Majors on the same day and suspect she was responsible for more 6 inchers in her life time than MJ. IMHO.
5s, I don't take anything to heart mate. Funny you should mention Take That. My wife likes them and to be honest, they have some great songs, can certainly hold a tune and they seem genuinely nice blokes.
I did think it a little sad about FFM. Totally overlooked in the wake of the MJ thing.
Got a phone call at work today from the office. Turns out that a lad I used to teach joined the army a year or two ago. His younger brother who I also have taught and is still at school has his heart set on professional rugby league or the army. It seems his parents came for him today as his older brother has just been killed in Afghanistan. Now that has really saddened me. People seem to get really upset and hysterical over someone they don't even know in hollywood dying (or Lady Diana) and I just wonder how they even begin to come to terms with the loss of someone that is close. I get a bit misty eyed when I watch "Goodbye Mr Chips" and today I feel a bit like he did when the Great War took so many of his ex pupils. Feel a bit odd actually.

Griff, that is a quality post mate. Respect.
I'd agree with you Griff. It's all about perspective.
** Hug for you** it has to hurt you too.
