RWF Chester Races summer weekend
I am putting this thread out to gauge what the interest would be like before i take it further or forget the idea.
With the Regiments move to Chester coming up, i am proposing that we get a weekend at Chester races organised on an annual basis probably mid july as there is normaly a Friday evening meeting and a Saturday afternoon meeting.
Having been many times this a great weekend, Not just for the dedicated racing enthusiasts its a great social weekend. There are lots of proposals that could be made with regards to arrangements and i am willing to organise this weekend along with possibly a bit of help from the PMC of the Sergeants Mess.
I feel that a weekend of this magnitude could be a great success if the interest is there, it should be open to all serving members, commrades, LOF's, old boys club, You wouldnt have to attend the both days if you prefered just the 1.
If you have any comments to make on this idea please be forth coming good or bad feel free to shoot me down. I do realise that a lot of it will be depend on the Bn commitments but there is no reason why some thing like this could not go ahead.
If you read the thread just make a comment so i can guage any interest before i start approaching people.
If any one is interested in meeting July 08 before the Bn return then let me know

Re: RWF Chester Races summer weekend
sorry b4 i get any abuse this is intended for wives and girlfriends to, we all know the ladies like to dress up. They have a competition on the Friday evening best dressed Male and Female. The Dress for us lot can be dictated nearer the time, possibly smart dress Friday and casual Saturday.

Re: RWF Chester Races summer weekend
The fixture list for 2008 shows the July meetings to be on Fri 11 (Ladies & Gent's evening) and Sat 12 July.
Prices for this range from £7.00 to £40.00 but there are Group discounts are available for certain enclosures for certain race meetings.

Sounds like a cracking idea Sox's and I am sure the Cheshires (1 Merrcian) do this each year a marque on a simular scale maybe they could help? I remeber Smudge Smith of the Cheshires attached to us in Chepstow telling me that they ran a race weekend at Chester each year.
Idealy located with road train access, sounds like a winner m8

Re: RWF Chester Races summer weekend
Hi Sox, don't know if you know this but the Regiment used to sponsor a race at Ludlow. It was called the RWF Handicap and there is a trophy. We stopped the sponsorship 10 or more years ago but no reason why it shouldn't be started again, maybe at Chester, with the Comrades Association fronting up the money for a tent. Give Bob Lake or Arthur Ellingham a call at RHQ if you are interested in pursuing this line.

Re: RWF Chester Races summer weekend
Sorry, it wasn't Ludlow, it was Bangor on Dee. Just watched the Blues beat Stade Francais in Heineken Cup putting them top of their group. That should make you happy!

Re: RWF Chester Races summer weekend
If anyone from RHQ or the 1st Bn decides to take a lead on this cracking idea, a good starting point would be here:

Re: RWF Chester Races summer weekend
Thanks Bob, yes i did know the Royal Welsh sponser the race i have been on a couple of occasions to Bangor on Dee but im not a jumps man im affraid and tend to use the jumps as a some thing to do day in the winter months. Didnt see the blues game as away at the mo but yes very pleased after reading the report.
Well there seems to be a bit of interest there at the moment with regards to the racing weekend , but will give it a week or so for people to get chance to read the thread before i start getting in touch with the future RSM and Regimental HQ

Sounds a great idea mate, we went from ternhil it was a great day. looking foward to it

Re: RWF Chester Races summer weekend
Great idea sox. I remember going to the Derby at Epsom a few years ago where the Guards had a tent and believe this to be a case every year. Maybe RWF could do something similar at Chester. And as you know there are lots of us in Wrexham who would support an event like that.

Re: RWF Chester Races summer weekend
Sounds like a brilliant idea especially with the Battalion being posted there

Re: RWF Chester Races summer weekend
Hi Sox well from reading all the threads its a great Idea, count me in mate as well its just down the road from Manchester.
-
Re: RWF Chester Races summer weekend
Sox,
Good idea, it has been mentioned once or twice in BHQ so support from the 1st Bn would not be an issue. This year would be tight though due to the Arms Plot move.
The Bn still have the marquee that could be utilised (I'm sure you would find a way around the small hire charge).
I have printed off the thread and will stick it in my hand over folder to Wayne Roberts.
