A British soldier has died of gunshot wounds in Afghanistan after his patrol came under fire from insurgents. The soldier, from 1st Battalion, The Royal Welsh was part of a foot patrol to disrupt insurgent activity in the Nahr-e Saraj District of Helmand Province, when his patrol came under attack from small arms fire.His next of kin have been informed, the Ministry of Defence said. Lieutenant Colonel John Kerner, spokesman for British Forces Helmand, said: 'It is my sad duty to inform you that a soldier from 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh has died as a result of injuries sustained while on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj District of Helmand Province.

A British solider who was shot dead in Afghanistan on Friday has been named as Corporal Michael Thacker.
The serviceman, from 1st Battalion, The Royal Welsh, was manning an observation post in the Nahr-e Saraj District of Helmand Province when his patrol came under attack from small arms fire, the ministry of Defence said.
He received immediate medical attention and was evacuated from the scene by helicopter but died of his injuries.

I Recruited Michael in to the Royal Welch Fusiliers, and from day one when i first met him his attitude to the Army was spot on, We also travelled to Iraq together on Op Telic 4 in which he was still as strong and commited to his job in the Royal Welch. Such sad news again. Michael, although a welshman lived just a short distance from me, having married a Coventry girl. Will anyone be printing these messages and sending/taking them to her at some point in the future? I just think it would be lovely for her to see that the Regiment does care.

The loss of any person is always difficult to come to terms with but the loss of a member of the Regimental family is very personal to us all. Michael paid the supreme sacrifice in the defence of his country. Sleep tight Michael your life's journey has wound it's course.
