E/MAIL..

Hi all.i had this e/mail sent to me..

How are you doing? I came over to England, United Kingdom for a short vacation. unfortunately,I was mugged at the park of the hotel where i stayed,all cash, cell phones and credit card were stolen from me but luckily for me i still have my passports with me.

I've been to the Embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and my flight leaves tomorrow but i am having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let me leave until I settle the bills. Well I really need your financial assistance..Please, Let me know if you can help me out?

i was sent this as a reply to a mail i sent to John Nunney (ex rwf) who lives in the states.

THE MAIL IS A SCAM...

jOHN was in europe on holiday but he had his computer hacked..the message was sent to all his contacts....
After a little bit of googling i found out the address in the mail is a take away ..
i e/mailed another ex rwf man in Canada a Doug Brooks..who is mates with Johns
and he told me the news.
so if any one has recieved the same e/mail...Please ignore it..

John is getting his computer sorted out..

Not that obvious when i have been talking to John and Doug for some time.the only thing different to other mails i have had is that the mailer did,not use my first name
as John and Doug all ways do..
but a near miss all the same.
.well worth checking even if the mail is from a friend...

The message was a scam.Someone got into Johns computer and sent off that
message. He was in Europe but got home safely. He in now getting his computer
cleaned out and is changing his passwords etc. Thanks for what you tried to do
for him. He will be most grateful when I let him know and will thank you

These emails have being doing the rounds for ages. Typically, they hack into free email providers and use addresses that haven't been accessed for ages- hereby stealing the details of the account owner, including his/her contacts.
The first thing you'd do on getting one - contact the sender. If you're someone they know well enough to ask for (large sums of) cash you'll have other ways to get in touch and I'd assume, use less formal language.

Common sense dicates that the police would be involved and that other ways to ensure safe passage are in motion.

I wonder what kind of twisted people think these things up and how many people believe them and send money. Sad!

Anything with Western union in it goes straight in my Nigerian spam

Just an update
I had a long chat with John Nunney last night,
John was in the btn in 1951.
He was in the uk at the time of the scam and is as mad as hell
He visited his sister in Brighton and the went over to France and went on a beaches tour
He told me the later part of his trip was very emotional .
He is home now and getting his pc sorted out.
So we might see him and Doug brooked on the forum soon..

Doug and John are some of the oldest Band Association Members alive. I too recevied this email asking for $1600. As I keep in touch with both these people I knew it was s scam as soon as i saw it. As it arrived via my Council email I was able to get the fraud boys to trace the ISP and the perpetrator will be visited by the Police wherever they maybe.

There is another scam of a similar kind doing the rounds. If you are booking accom on-line and they ask for a Western Union cash transfer to secure the property then do not use the vendor as it's a scam eminating in Ireland I'm told.

Interestingly the address given in the Nunney scam doesn't exist!

Chow my friend, if I knew somebody well enough for them to ask me for a loan out of the blue, they would have my telephone number and would ask me in person not drop me a note or an e-mail. I stand by what I said, anybody caught with such an obvious scam deserves little sympathy. If it sounds too good to be true...it usually is. Never reply to an authentication out of the blue (remember your old comms security), a Sky chap phoned my wife the other day to try to get us to update. He started his banter by asking the answers to our security questions. Remember he phoned us not the other way around, so why ask us for the answers to our security questions ......no way jose (pronounced ho-zay). Hang up time.
