when did the cap badge and hackle stop being worn over the eye and start being worn at the side of the head .why the change and for what reason
You are right , I was always told to wear it over the eye . It depended who your CSM was really. As I recall , quite a few lads wore it on the side of the head , not quite the side , but not above the eye . Yoko and Ken Lloyd spring to mind .
Its more of a Foreign thing many French units wear it like that, I suppose its traditional to them may look to be cool, Personally I feel over the Left eye is the way it should remain its looks more professional, next they will have the cord hanging loose at the rear, That's fine for certain units in Europe!
Has it Changed?
I was brought up in an army environment, served 29 years in the Royal Wekch and was always told/taught, trhat the cap badge was over the left eye.
When you look at a soldier now, the majority of time you cannot see initially which regiment/corps he or she is from.
The Hackle will always stand proud wherever the Badge is.
our cap badge has always been and should always in the future be worn over the left eye as everyone was taught its also in line with your heart
There has been no change to wearing the cap badge over the left eye, its just some indivauls think its good to wear it on the side, trust me it dosent get unnoticed and CSM`s & Pl Sgts are all over it if the indivaual gets caught doing it they will be delt with....and we have not stopped wearing the Hackle we still wear it with pride
I think the Para's started it all by wearing their berets with the cap badge over the left ear as early as 1972 if not earlier, not something that the Royal Welch followed at the time.
Joe.
The Paras considered it "ally/cool"to wear their beret badge to the left side of the eye with each battalion having their own tilt on the thing, you could sometimes tell which battalion they were without looking for the DZ flash just by the way the beret was worn
Quite right about paras but have also seen on TV on welcome home parades other regiments including the Royal Fusiliers wearing their berets in this fashion. On a recent TV interview the CO 1 RWR was also wearing his capbadge at the side of his head.I must say I have not seen the other ranks from 1RWR wearing it in this fashion so far and hope I never do
Don't know when the picture was taken , but , just take a look at the standard bearer on our home page . Just an observation .:skeptical:
Last night on the box Prince Charles visiting Mercian Regiment to a man badges worn on the side of the head except for the Prince himself.
Re standard bearer well spotted .
That "guy" on the right is Mr Frank Dolan ex WO2 (father of ex Sgt Colin Dolan and grand father of Cpl Mike Dolan all of 1 RWF/ 1 R WELSH and I belive his father also served in the RWF) Frank was the caretaker at Hightown Barracks after leaving the 1st Battalion, Colin took over the post from his father when he left the 1st Bn.
My apologies, did not mean to disrespect Frank at all, his cap badge position is questionble, never realised it was him, anyway, a cap badge position does not determine a soldiers quality in my opinion. and the boys today wear helmets more often than not so it wont count soon enough.
as an ex wo2 he should know better?
