You might be right do you mean the streets on the way to the creggan
Yeah,
I must be a sad old git but I seem to be able to remeber lots of trivial useless stuff. Remember they hammered street names into us for months before we left??
Cochroach, Mo Ullah fancied the pants off her,
( Girda )
Yep! I was there the night we went to the Creggan for the show in the camp. The char walla didnt want to give us more than 2 beers so we took them all. We all got absolutely S### Faced including the Pig driver and we broke down under the lights on the overpass in the Bog. Jinx called out night sun and the whole seventh Cavalry. We finally figured out that the Pig Driver had'nt turned the petrol on. And Yes the Man u scarfe and slippers were involved as well.
Any body remember Big Griff from that Bog tour? He was the IRA Sympathiser who thought the SAS shot the Pope. Jinx and myself were on the front gate one night and all you could hear coming towards us from the diamond was someone singing Men Of Harlech it was Griff.
Tony 47
I remember coming back from the CSE show up the Creggan as well when the pig broke down on the flyover. Didn't we all go into snap VCP mode and bluff it.
Remember the gasworks tanker escort charade?

Lads what great reading and great memories, from the formation in Tidworth through to late in Lemgo I remember all the things you are on about. and yes some one had to bring up the Gerry Crocker wake up call when I got away with telling him to F*****8 craped my self really when he answered. Yes it was a gas mask, helmet the state of her I need one should have put the whole suit on, wasn't fit enough in them days to leave the filter on though even with the counts (OC) long long long distance morning runs in noddy suits and then servicing the 432's. Never stopped us getting shedded though did it lads.
Best night was the Sunday or was it Monday early Hours when climbed over the fencing up stairs to get into the gym and clear up the booze form the Sgt's Mess summer or X Mas ball. Yes I did the curry but after the function Yanto lol thought you was going to kill me in the morning. Best laugh ever Misfit squatting over Neil lock?? going to Far* on him but followed through. Lads could go on for ever great days never to be repeated unfortunately but what a great place to live the good old rattle, Sorry any one in the drums remember when Benny Nash always used to come in last at night shedded and always switched the lights on. We took the fuse out and he spent nearly an hour flicking the switch which was even worse. It was Benny who was responsible for the battle of the Rattle if I remember right?
Hi Beano
Not C company mate, good clean living bunch of lads. And it was scotty blair pooping on siggy in his new white suit bought from the cookhouse the night before we went on our first leave if i remember right. AND gerry was there making sure we were on the square ready for the superbus. Been waiting for a long time to get rid of us so he could chill. Poor Gerry! What a man
regards
Dai
I remember a big scrap under the gym between 7 and 9 platoons. I think that kicked off after an altercation between Benny and Tom 31 over a girl in the NCO's room. 8 platoon sort of divvied themselves down the middle. Toilet sinks full of blood afterwards.
Appalling living conditions. Low pay. Violence. the good old days. There would be a parliamentary enquiry about it these days. Times have changed I guess.
In Derry, remember sneaking off down the Fountains to a tea stop for some whiskey on New Year's Eve 1978 with Gauvain. There was hell on. I remember Paul Nash just clocking me one for it. End of story. Wouldn't happen nowadays.

I Griff in 86 we were still popping in for a cuppa there funny enough Guvs and Paul were on the same tour "Must like the Place I guess
I remember hiring a bus to pick us up to go to a Rinteln Disco one Saturday night. Of course it was run through the "Little Green Apple Club" that Jinx and I had founded in our ultimate wisdom. Sam Moon had organized his group "The Flowers" W*****s Anyway the bus was picking us up at 1900 hrs and we were all in the Zur Post at 1100 hrs. We all swore there would be no Alcohol until 1700 hrs? I think the first round of drinks were bought at 11:15 hrs. The next step was everyone had to purchase and wear a funny hat!
There were every kind of hat you could think of, Baby bonnets with fuzzy ears. etc etc. What a great time. Dai Beer said to me at the Reunion this year and I quote " How the Hell did we ever survive Lemgo"
Great times, Great People, Great Memories.
Yer Lemgo so many memories the Post as mentioned The Dap Bar Sammy's Bar the Students Bar the Das Ding and the Spiks Bar had a tab there well a mat on the shelf Oh and a place we use play darts comp's in don't remember its name.
Oh and Pizza Place by the Dap Bar, Got pulled once me and Scouce Whitlow for riding a bike back to camp the two of us by the Filth sorry the German Police, such nice guys they went for our story that we found the bike in the road and were moving them as they were a hazard, now the fact we were picking our selfs up for the10th time so p..... it would of been quicker walking back, but then the Pigs arrived Red Caps and em they did not believe a thing funny enough but they took back to camp and all was forgotten, only it was now 2am and Mouse Coopers Cinderella curfew was on and we were late oh ****!
Happy Days
PS what ever happened to that bike
I think the place we played darts in was called "al-fonzes" Barry, but cant be sure mate.
A couple of other possibles, but cant remember the names...The bar opposite Bills?????
The one up at the Pads behind the barracks. And also the "Jukebox".
Bar opposite Bills was maria's
Dai, wasn't the bar opposite Bill's was Walters, and Al the one behind the pads was Jimmy's ..
Hi Carl.
Where the hell was Maria's bar ??? wasn't that opposite Bill's bar ? tell you what I cant remember Lemgo let alone what happened there !!!
Hey lads this is a cracking thread but why dont you all organise a reunion in lemgo?bet it would be a good one, this could go for Berlin as well, nearly 20 yrs since we were in Berlin time is flying by boys :winker:
I would be up for a reunion but I dont think Lemgo would be to pleased with the return of the Royal Welch (sounds like horror movie) how about one in the UK.
Does anybody remember the ghost of the small boy that was that was seen by one of the RP,s in one of the blocks that was being done up at the time in Lemgo or am I just having a senior moment also can anyone tell me what ever happened to that flaming boat that we kept doing up whilst we were in Tidworth like who actually owned it and were did it go when we went to germany.
I thought the ghost was of an SS officer in full uniform????
Wasn't the dap bar actually the Dat bar?
Are we talking boat as in a yacht that the officers went sailing on with a token peasant just to keep the boat tidy? Can't remember the name as whne I was in the 16th/5th, they had one and the name sticks.
When they were doing the blocks out, I am sure I remember a company going off to live in Detmold and causing a bit of an uproar. Think it was deltas.
wasshael
I think, although I'm not sure, the name of the boat was 'Shenkin'
Correct Bob! Which was owned by the PRI and the Battalion had it in Honiton, I think berthed in Sidmouth, also took it to Hong Kong.
I think it was sold in Lemgo. I did sail on it once whilst in Honiton, never wanted to sail on a yatch ever again, very fast! I belive it was a Bermudan Sloop! if my nautical jargon is correct?
Bob, Ianto 10,
You are correct, and the story goes? that a young Lt who was doing extras as duty officer at the time(a TA Officer on an S type) was given the task to sell "Shenkin" in Lemgo, so in his wisdom he sent a "Flash" signal All the sigs boys will know about these) to all units in Germany to try and sell the boat, it was said that the Air Commandore thought that "shenkin" was a codename to activate a DefCon, so got all the bombers in Germany on the runways ready to go - only a TA RWF Officer could pull a stint like that
Pub's in Lemgo which we were allowed in ( Dont know wheather the battalion banned the rest or the locals just didn't want us in them.
Bill's Bar, ( I think Curly Clewer bought this after we left )
Walters Bar.
Jimmy's bar ( behind the camp)
Zur Post
Dak Bar
Sammy's Bar. ( Run by Felix )
There was also a bar a couple of doors up from the Zur Post that was a snell imbiss cant remember the name.
Also cant remember the name of the bar which was off to the right of Mittle Strasse, or the one top right opposite Sammy's.
Any other's ???????
What about the Spick Bar?
John, that was the The "Das Ding". After about 21/2 yrs in Lemgo they finally allowed us in there. Indeed one night myself Keith Darlington, Mogs 14, Dave Ellis, Paul Dyer and a few others actually got "locked" in there. We paid for a taxi so the barmaid could go home and check on her kids, so she locked us in!! She didn't return until 5.30 in the morning, during which time we helped ourselves to the bar..tee hee. I can remember lying on the floor, as at some point during the night a German copper shown his torch inside doing a security check.
Sadly our trips to the Das Ding came to a sudden halt one Friday evening when Mal 96 decided to ventilate the bar by hoiking a bicycle through the window!! Nice One Mal
Gentlemen,
can't work out how to create an 8pl album so I thought it might be fun if everyone posted a then and now pair of pics. Thing is when you get on a bit the old memory starts to go and it helps to put a name to a face (and vice-versa). I will leave it to you to decide which is then and which is now.
I was'nt 8 Plt but drums 9 Plt the fight that was mentioned earlier was benny and tom31 it happened after a company smoker in the gym above us
Al Fonzes (Detmold Strasse by Biestiberg married quarters).
Jurgens bar (a street that run's parallel to Mittel strasse)Which closed @ 0700hrs just b4 company log run.
Mucka F*** (Night club, dominated by our Turkish friends).
Margrets bar (Husband named Heinze) lovely couple! Also possibly known as "Dak bar"?
well spotted Jim.
Ah yes. Our dear old CSM. I remember getting put on one of those christian information weekends which of course was intolerable to a self respecting heathen like me. I promptly went down to the orderly room and changed my religion to agnostic. (they didn't have Odinist on the list). I seem to remember Ianto 10 not being best pleased as it was thought that I had outflanked the powers that be. Me!!!!!!!!??????? I think these days I would love to go on the course so I could bait the vicar mercilessly. In the Lancers, we had a service on the square for our tercentenary and we were expected to sing a hymn. I refused and the RSM threw a fit and jailed me in front of the regiment. (substansive full corporal at the time as well).
Anyway mate, how are you these days? You doing alright for yourself??
WHERE ARE EVERYONE'S THEN AND NOW PICS. TOO EMBARRASSED??? It doesn't matter if you haven't aged quite as well as I have.
another bar i can remember is the germania stubchen i think it was down the bottom of mittel strasse
Cledwyn,
if you look under the box where you type in a reply there is a 'Manage Attachemnts' button.
From there you just browse your computer for the pic you want and hit 'upload'. Should work.
I take it tony 47 has long hair then. Seem to remember him getting Bobby Charlton syndrome even way back in the seventies. He must look like Bill Bailey.
Come on Tony, lets see the flowing locks!!!!
To all 8 Platoon members(Tidworth/ Lemgo)
Any chance of a meet on this comrade's reunion 2009
