Excellent. Now wait and see. Swiper or Maarheze may have something to contribute, I hope.

The beret appears to have some sort of patch behind the badge. Also I.m wondering what the insignias are on his left upper arm. One is possibly a horizontal bar.

Ok, hey mate its me from WW2Talk, I believe that with the detail you have given me that this indicates that he was in the 160 Brigade in 1945 (in regards to the horizontal stripes) which mark Brigade seniority, 160 being the most junior.
I am going off that, as I believe there are 3 horizontal stripes below the Welsh Div symbol with has the 'W' with a ___ underneath it, which did NOT count as an Arm of Service stripe. (Explaining methodology).
Therefore, I place him in 7 RWF, which was moved to 160 Brigade after August 1945. It all came down to the date on the back of the photograph, and also indicates this was taken before 2 SWB was rotated into 53rd Div, replacing 7 RWF which rotated out into (I think) 54 Independant Brigade.
Capbadge may have a backing - but certainly cannot say from that picture, and its not something I've encountered before or seen mentioned.
Bearing in mind Swipers estimate that Mac was a 7th Bn man. You can read part of their War Diary, which Swiper transcribed and is held in The Vault.

thanks swiper for taking the time to look things up for me ....the information is so good to know...at the moment i am reading ''red crown red dragon'' and now knowing that he was possibly in the 7th RWF .. as they were in the thick of things in 44 / 45 is amazing i wish i could of asked him about it but as you know they never spoke about what they went through ..as you know i have been on ww2talk but this site i think will be better for me.. so would you like me to download my other photos to this site and i don't mind if you want to use them.. i will send off for his records so when i find out more i will post it... thanks again.
Posting of information and/or photos is always appreciated here, fudgereedoo. So please do. Everything you can offer will add to our knowledge.

That'd be good, RCRD is ok... but has its fair stonk of errors and confused narrative, hence why my book (finishing off now...) will address these ;) Put up the pics here mate, people will love them.
Attachment 2196 here is a better picture showing his arm badge.......i don't know if this was taken the same time as the other photo ..no date on back.
