The game of 'Don'

Is this card game still played in the Bn?

What a great game - from mess games nights to the back of a 432 in Soltau.

Only ever seen it played outside the Bn once and never known a civvy that's heard of it, maybe it has another name in civvy st? Maybe it is an exclusively Welsh game?

The place I saw it outside the Bn was - well - I don't remember the name of the place actually, we were on exercise in W Germany whilst stationed in Berlin, got bunked up in some camp or other with some tankies who were all Welsh. My partner (can't even remember who that was, but must've been support coy, or sigs at the time) and I, absolutely took them to the cleaners.

I found a Don website once!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyway I have a question ........ (that the Don website owner didn't know the answer to)

How do you play 'Two-Handed Don'? (Don for two players instead of four)

Keith May taught it to me once - and I played it with just a few other people. Think we're talking Lemgo!

Can't remember the first thing about how it's played. I did PM Keith for the rules; he replied about 2 years later but I couldn't make head nor tail of what he was on about, and I'm buggered if I'm gonna wait another 2 years for elaboration!

Hi John, we used to play Don and Fat in RRW Cpls Mess, POW Club etc. I came home on leave to Denbigh in N Wales a few times and found them playing Don in the Plough Inn in Denbigh. In the end they had to let me have a Game to make a foursome, and were quite taken that 1 so young could play the GREAT Game. I really preferred a game of Fat though. :cool:

I used to play the game alot when in Bn. Living here in SE, nobody plays it, so not played game since 91.

Has anyone writen the rules down may I ask? If they have, can you please supply so I could poss get peeps down here playing the game.

In 2 man don, you deal to each player 3 row's of 6, in addition to this each player has 3 cards which are blind to thier opponent, you play the game in exactly the same way as 4 man done, using trumps, 5s and the don 9 for scoring. The opponent opposite the dealer pitch's with his 3 cards blind to his opponent. Remember when dealing you only reveal the top row of the person that making the pitch, all the dealers cards remain blind untill the pitch has been made, which must be done with his lead card.

Ps 4 man Don is a game that is played in most locals in Cardiff, with many having house trophys.

i live in lancashire and the game is played in my local but it is called welsh don so it probably was o game originated in wales

Thanks John - ringing bells - so, those 18 cards per player equal the 9 per hand dealt for the normal 4 player game.

So - the pitcher has his blind (to his opponent) 3 cards, plus another how many - six? i.e. one of those three rows ? In other words, the dealer's 3 rows are face down, the pitchers 3 rows has one face up, those and the three 'blind' ones make the hand that he chooses the trump suit from - yes?

By 'pitch has been made' do you mean that the trump suit is called by the first card pitched?

And when the pitch is made, how does the game continue - the dealer turns over his top six cards? And then what?
