Lt Col Gareth John Jarvis Neale CBE TD BA LLB (Late RWF/Welch Regt/RRW)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lieutenant Colonel Gareth John Jarvis Neale CBE TD BA LLB on Monday 29th April at the age of 87. Gareth had a long and distinguished military career spanning over four decades.
He was commissioned into the Royal Welch Fusiliers in 1955 as a National Service officer, later transferring to the Territorial Army with the 6/7th Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers in 1957. Gareth served with the 5th Battalion The Welch Regiment from 1964 until 1967 when he retired from the Territorial Army.
However, his service did not end there. Gareth joined the Army Cadet Force in Glamorgan in 1967. In 1985, he transferred to the 3rd Battalion Royal Regiment of Wales as a Lieutenant in the Home Service Force Company. He was promoted to Captain in 1988 and then Major in 1989. Gareth went on to serve at HQ 160 (Welsh) Brigade as the Military Liaison Officer for Glamorgan, being awarded the Territorial Decoration and the brevet rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1993 before retiring in 1995.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Gareth made immense contributions to his community. He served as the Lord Mayor of Cardiff from 2006-2007 and was appointed CBE in the 1987 New Year Honours List for services to local government.
Funeral details to follow in due course.
