Smoking ban

What are peoples views on the smoking ban now in force? Will pubs survive? Will it help people to quit? Give us your thoughts folks.

I always thought you'd go far Will, No I agree smoking has been too available as a social activity in the past but no more, Pubs will cope as people go to them to interact and drink of course, we have moved on from the snug "Rovers" and people will move on from smoke filled bars, and yes think of the staff whom had no choice, its got to be better for all, and there is always the beer garden (and I think that is where the Tobacco plant belongs).

Most of us have young kids and would wish for them a healthier society than we had?

well i quit march 1st , reason being promotion in my job and as a smoker it did not seem right that i should enforce the ban hence my quitting . i agree with will i wish id never started but if we all said that everytime we did something or never did somthing what a boring world eh

having been an avid anti-smoker all my life and lost both my father's parents to lung cancer (as heavy smokers) I fully subscribe to my great grandfathers saying.

"If God intended you to smoke he would have put a chimney pot in the top of your head!"

Two of my children work in the Health Profession and they see enough of the heart ache this terrible habit has caused not only to the smoker but to their family's as well.

When I was at the Royal Military School of Music Kneller Hall, Twickenham I was privilaged to met a very fine entertainer and musician named Roy Castle, he never smoked in his life, but working in that business saw him become a passive smoker and he unfortunately became a victim of passive smoking and died of Lung Cancer.

So for me, this ban could not come soon enough!!

Is the smoking ban in the UK a full ban, or is it at the discretion of owners/managers?
We've had a ban here in Holland for a while now, but some cafe's still allow a smoking section. It's very noticeable if we've been out for a quick sandwich at lunchtime, the smell hangs on our clothes afterwards. It definitely only takes one.
I find it peculiar that a lot of establishments are building shelter over the entrances to their building or in the beer gardens, surely people will still have to walk through a cloud of smoke to get into a pub or restaurant and what provisions will be made for the stubs? Big ashtrays outside pubs, or little faggy mountains for passing kids to kick up?

Having said that: I don't smoke often and months can pass, but when I go out I do like a cigarette with a drink :confused:

I believe it's a full ban Sharon. Probably the same as Ontario Canada it is all indoor public areas. It came into effect here in Waterloo in 2004 and all across Ontario last year. I also agree with Will in that it is the best thing that could ever happen. No longer do I come home smelling like an old ash tray after just popping into the local for a beer on the way home.
There was an outcry from pubs, bars and retaurants at first because they said that they would have to close. However, they are all going strong and always full. During the winter you still see the odd person standing outside the bar wrapped up in layers of clothes (-20) with just two tiny slits around their headgear for their eyes and a cigarette. I think I would rather quit than freeze to death.

I gave up smoking in 2000, I didnt have a problem at first with smokers in the pubs, but i did have problems with people after eating lighting up, whilst others were still eating. Its not until you smell your clothes the next day that that you appreciate giving up, and I for one am glad its come in. I can go out now andf come home without smelling of an ashtray.

Well done to the Welsh assembly for having the B@@locks to ban it from public places. Pitty they didn't carry it out also because they were the first ones to flout this ban and get caught.

I was a long time pipe smoker when I was in the 1st Bn, I gave up in 1982 and became a devout anti smoker.
I think it will encourage more non smokers to go out for a drink and a meal, so I say not before time.

yes it is a very good idea. its going to help me lots because im tying to quit. so ill be cutting down a huge amount. i agree with sharon that its nice to have a fag with your drink but its also better in the long run to limit the amount of places you can smoke. its been banned in our TA centres even outside the centre you must be the other side of the gate so im not smoking as much as i used to. and the government, they will never ban ciggarettes because of the money they gain from them. but im sure when its more cost effective to ban them they will. that said.
