Hi again
What would the role/duties of a Sergeant in the Territorial Force (RWF) have been - both at home and then abroad?
Sorry. I know it's a very general and quite gormless query!

The same as in the Regular Army: being responsible for, and leading, a group of lower ranks, or performing a specialised task such as administration (the Orderly Room Sergeant), supply (the Quartermaster Sergeant), looking after the weapons and transport (the Armourer Sergeant and the Transport Sergeant) etc.
John
Thanks John. I thought it might be like that but wasn't sure that it would mean quite the same in the TF.
What was highest rank that could be achieved in the TF - for the ordinary civilian recruits?
Milly
Highest rank was in theory the Regimental Sergeant Major, although in many instances he was attached to the TF from the Regular Army. The rank of Company Sergeant Major was perfedctly possible for a TF man, given time.
Commissioned officers were usually local dignitaries and would not have come up through the ranks. Of course the war changed all that.
John
Brilliant! Thanks once again, John.
