Samuel Mason 11354/202583 RWF is on a War Office RWF wounded casualty list dated 11/6/1918. This is the list date , not the date he was wounded. Generally the lists relate to wounding 4-6 weeks previously. Allthough his number is in the 4th Bn (TF) number block by that stage in the war men with TF numbers could be serving in any Battalion. In fact the actual Medal Roll for him (the page 11268 reference on his medal card) shows 13th Battalion only. The list is quite a lengthy one being 321 in total. Although I haven't thoroughly researched it I have seen enough to give an informed opinion that it is one of the lists of the 113rd Bde (13th, 14th, 16th Bns) casualties from an attack carried out to secure observation into the Ancre Valley on 22nd April 1918. This is barely mentioned in the Regimental History and even then is described as a 'minor affair'. Yet between them the battalions lost ORs to the tune of 113+ Killed, 455+ wounded and 36+ missing!!!
The lists proved a placename for the men. His shows Birkenhead. Which AVL is it that shows him as 4th Bn RWF? I have the AVL for Birkenhead West but didn't spot him in my trawl for RWF men in it. I may have missed him though. I'd be interested in the location of any of the other Birkenhead AVLs. "
