Published privately in a limited edition of five hundred copies in 1938, it gained a reputation as an outstanding account of an infantry battalion's (2RWF) experience on the Western Front.
It was written and edited by the 2nd Battalions Medical Officer Capt JC Dunn MC. Himself a tough uncompromising Scot, this book is a must for anyone with an interest in the regiment in the Great War. It covers all the 2nd Battalions actions, and readers are left in know doubt, that life in the trenches was hard, and that injury or death was almost guaranteed.
The book has contributions from personal diaries and recollections across the rank spectrum, it also includes an index, photos and trench maps.
Its one of those rare books that you can read, then re read in a couple of years and discover something new.

It's an excellent read. :2thumbsup
Re: The War The Infantry Knew
I have almost finished it for the first time (my evening read, as opposed to the other book I am reading during lunch breaks) and it will certainly need reading more than once, the wealth of information it contains is unrivaled I think on a single Bn from the Great war.
Re: The War The Infantry Knew
I treated myself to a hardback edition as I enjoyed it so much, well worth reading more than once IMO.
Re: The War The Infantry Knew
Hello,
I agree with all the previous observations on T W T I K, I have read it and liked it a lot. In fact I have gone over board and picked up extra copies from local book sales. When one considers the wealth of R.W.F. history written by serving soldiers it is truly amazing. Plus the fact that the forum has a mass of information about medals and all the R W F battalions histories at our finger tips due to a lot of erudite non serving members of the R W F who regale us with all sorts of information and facts about our Regiment. It never fails to impress me what prolific authors and specialists we have in many fields. The forum and it's members must be proud of the likes of G Knight, D Langley, Dr John, and Richard Ward Al Poole, Lars A and Gwiwil, and any I have forgotten, my thanks go out to you all. And in keeping to an Infantry man's code of honour I will raise a glass to you all tonight with my deepest respect for you all.
