hi can u help.my late brother.24203176 colin thomas hughes served in northern ireland in the 1970s where he was shot and slightly wounded. did he qualify for his northern ireland medal. did anyone who served with colin know the answer. regards wendy rowland (his youngest sister )
Hi Wendy the current standing to qualify for a medal is 30 days in a operational enviroment and if he was wounded before this time i am sure he would of automatically qualified. I am sure there are more qualified personel on the forum who will be able to give you more guidance and to where you can apply for a first issue or a replacement
scorch (jas)

Scorch is spot on. 30 days service for the General Service Medal with Northern Ireland clasp (not necessarily continuous) and a gallantry award or a wounding would automatically qualify you for the award.

Hi Wendy - never guess what my army number is - 24203175!
He did about 8 months on the tour he got injured on and did at least one more tour of NI after that. More than qualified!
hi wendy, the only hughes i can remember getting shot was serving in the anti tank platoon with me if my memory serves me right he was shot by a 22cal and the bullet passed between his arm and his side of his chest leaving a groove each side a very lucky escape if it is the same person im on about. im sorry to hear of your brorthers passing. for doing that job for 50 pence a day and after tax 30 pence he more than qualified for his medal. reguards . jeff.

Hi Wendy,
As mentioned in my e-mail. Colin did several tours of Northern Ireland, and more than qualified for his inch of glory. I'm suprised it was not with his previous partner, Rose.
Check out some of the photos of the 70's there are one or two of Colin on there of us in the jungle in Belize.
Regards
Clive

Thanks to a good friend of mine this medal has appeared on the radar. He does not have it - but spotted it on Ebay

It seems it did not reach the vendors reserve.
Good luck
Richard
