Hi,
Having moved into GP surgery practice management after leaving the Army in 1993 I have to tell you that the MOD will never release your full medical documents. What they will do is let you have a summary of the major ailments and operations you might have had during your service.
Afterthought - the last time I tried (and failed) to get a retired Major General's medical record was in 2004 so the rules might well have changed since then and I will be grateful to hear how you get on.

Hi Keith,
I sent for my medical records about two years ago, I downloaded a Subject Access Request Form from the MOD site, the form is a two page document and is very easy to fill in.
You also have to provide proof of identity, they give you a list of items accepttable to the MOD.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Joe.

Thanks Joe, but did you get your WHOLE medical record or merely a summary form listing major medical events and records of immunisations and vaccinations - which was all that was released in my case, perhaps because of the special forces connection?
Bit more info after speaking to the Mrs who is still serving with the QA's, when you have you final medical you should receive a slip of paper explaining how and were you GP can retrieve all of your medical doc's and by law they should receive a full copy of them..........

Hi Keith,
In the letter enclosed with my medical record it states that under the Data Protection Act 1998 I am entitled to recieve copies of my full Service Medical History, it goes on to say "Please find enclosed a 100% copy of the contents of your F Med 4, it then says " As stated, this is a 100% copy of all Medical documentation held by the Army Personnel Centre, however, if you consider that other Medical documentation exist that you have not recieved please provide more detailed information and we will investigate further".
In my case I recieved the full record.
Regards,
Joe.
PS. Two points the of the letter I missed out are important, the first is that once you have your record it is up to youto pass on the information to your doctor or third party, the second point is that if you are dissatisfied with the service you have recieved in response to your enquiry, please send your complaint to the following address: ACS(P&D), APC Civ Sec, MP510, Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street, Glasgow G2 8EX.
Just for your info. I applied for a copy of my med records in Aug this year and unless you have a priorty case I was told it could take up to 6 months for you to receive your records. If you get your GP to apply you need to provide a letter of authorization to ypur Gp to go with their letter. Also they will only accept one application every 12 months from any source. I luckily had a priority and received my FULL records in 5 weeks.
