Why is it ?

When a new member joins the forum , they are put on the home page . Their details are in differing colours . When the details are in a browny colour and I click to see the profile , access is denied . Why is this . It has happened quite a few times ?

They are 'Users Awaiting Moderation'. That is normal when we are Moderating new members.

When people first register, they are sent an email asking them to activate their account. Once they do, or they are manually approved, the colour will change

I think that the messages of thanks are now in a collapsable menu, below the actual post. If you click on it, it will open up and show the persons who have posted thanks.

Scouse is correct and that is how it should work

However, the recent upgrade reverted the template back to the original and activated the social bookmark icons.

I have now corrected that and everything should be back to normal. The Thank-you box will collapse after 10 members have posted their thanks

Robert, where can I get some of those 'Thank You's'?

It takes a lot more than 10 of anything, nowadays, to make me collapse so if the 'Thank You's' box collapses after ONLY 10, I want some of whatever they are!
