Heard a discussion on the radio today about "Compulsory Slop Buckets". Apparantly we will all now have to save our food waste or face a fine. I heard arguments for and against the idea but I wondered if anyone has been part of one of the trials apparently taking place around the country. I must admit the thought took me back to doing dixies in the cookhouse. (made me gag) Anyone witnessed it yet and how was it??

It started about a month ago in Swansea, they give you 2 plastic bins small one for the kitchen about a foot square and a bigger one for outside they collect the big one once a week dont have a problem at present they have a locking system with the handle so nothing can get into it or it wont open when knocked over
i havent heard about a fine though not that i waste much food
When they come round your way try and get hold of a second one would be ideal for storing things in

We have the trial going on at the moment, and its not to bad, after the initial outlay by the local authority its a good way of recycling what would normally go in a black bag and in the normal waste bin,my inlaws in south wales have been doing the food waste bins for over 2 years now and have had no adverse effects in their kitchens ie smells or vermin :spinny:

This reply is in no way intended to be sarcastic in any way whatsoever.

I just wanted to say that this is why I love the Forum so much!! Where else are we going to discuss swill bins and the fact that 'My in-laws in South Wales' have got one!!! Absolute class. keep it up. And I really am being sincere here!

We have exactly that system here in Waterloo Gwyn. It works well and everything turns into compost. It's been with us for over a year now, however, don't put your left over soup in the paper bags as they can get very soggy. Also, don't go on vacation and forget your Slop bag as when you come back there will be furry green slime creeping out of the bag. Enjoy

Gwyn,

I know I am going back a few years however when I was a lad I remember the "swill man" coming round every week. Don't really know why it stopped. But I think it may well have been something to do with pigs getting disease from it.

I remember that myself Paul. Apparently all this food is going into some great machine that turns the food waste into Methane. (I thought Methane was a primary cause of the so-called Global Warming effect!)

(I thought Methane was a primary cause of the so-called Global Warming effect!)

If released in to the atmosphere then yes, but when contained and burned as fuel it produces less CO2 and more heat/energy than other hydrocarbon fuels.

Moral of story - light all your farts.

Type in Slop Buckets on your server and read what the papers report along with comments from the public.

Here in Holland, private houses don't do it but most restaurants have their slops collected by a bi-weekly lorry. It does the rounds of Leiden and fills up - then takes it all to a farm where I think it's fed to the pigs.

You can always tell which mornings the lorry's been through the streets cos there's a trail of sour liquid on the ground and the putrid smell is everywhere...blurgh.

Steve,

Those bins would really have given the pigs disease!
