Talking to an old friend on the phone last night, someone I haven't seen or heard of for over thirty years, and thinking that I knew pretty much everything about him I was surprised to hear him tell me that he'd been a junior leader at the same camp I had been, only I joined a year after he'd left. Now I know there are a couple of others on the forum who also have been junior leader/soldier because I have talked with them about it so I was just wondering, how many are there of us out there who were juniors at Oswestry, Shorncliff, Rhyl etc before joining the battalion?

All these 12 guys joined the Bn, 4 of us completed 22+(would have been 5, but one took redundency in the early 90's). Only one finished at the 3yr point whilst we were in Lemgo, everyone else served at least 4-5yrs with the Bn. Binning Juniors was a massive recruiting and retention error.

Here's something that may be of interest to one and all.
You may or may not know that there is an 'IBB & IJLB Association' and it represents all the infantry boy soldiers who served from 1958 to 1985 at camps all over the country. There is too, for the very first time, a reunion parade, (including military band) that will be marching in Oswestry this June the 7th where the Town's Mayor will unvail a comemoritive plaque.
For further info or just a look-see go to: www.IBB & IJLB (http://www.IBB & IJLB)

IJLB Oswestry May 70 - Jul or Aug 72.
In fact it was May 5th 1970 I arrived at Park Hall Camp.
A quick bit of mental arithmetic told me that that was 39 years ago to tne day - and my calculator confirmed that.
Thanks a bunch!

I was at IJLB Shorncliff Peninsular Coy 1979-80, was there with Dai Davies from Lampeter, he did 3 years with the Batt, seen him again mid 90s in a car park in Aberystwyth, short chat then gone again.Any body out there seen him or know of him, say hello,if he has won the lottery, remind him becouse he has possibly forgotten, that we promised to share any large amounts of money that we came into, this pact was made in the students bar in Lemgo, after a beer or 2,3,4,5,6,etc, he has possibly had a memory lapse and forgotten this.Travelling from Folkstone to Dolgellau, was very similer to travelling to the moon, nearly the same distance, definitely the same travelling time, and possibly the same prospect of seeing something strange and wierd.
Thank you for your time and patience, may your flocks multiply, and may your pizza allways give you that nice warm comforting feeling that only pizza brings.

Oswestry was something else!
I called in there ... or at least where it was ... on my way back from last year's comrades weekend and paid my respects to the starter of this thread.
There is a garden in his memory at the location of the armoury. It was a very strange experience trying to imagine where everything was and what went on there, where there is nothing much at all now, but I'll be repeating it again this year.
I didn't serve at the same time as Neil but I met him at a sigs reunion in Wrexham shortly before he passed away.

I was in Oswestry 9 Sept 68-70
Hi All
I was at IJLB Oswestry April 72 - Aug 74
B company
with Dave Johnson79 (who was my best man in 1976)
Recce pln at Tidworth then Vigilant then C Compay
Went from Lemgo to the Depot Crickhowell 78 to 82
Then transfered to SASC in 82
Medically discharged at 22 year point in 96
Living in Tamworth
I was also at Oswestry 1972 - 1974 (can't remember months) and was there with Alan Ankers, Gary Fitzek and Alan Caan (who I believe has passed away).
I remember it as quite scary for a 15yr old, first time away from home but it turned out to be the some of the best years of my life. From there joined the signals platoon at Tidworth.
Oh to return to those good days!
