Hello all, I am trying to get copies of my dad's service medals from WW1. He had two of them and sadly they have been lost. The information on one of them is 7358 PTE T.Graham RW FUS I don't know if I am in the right place; am I correct in thinking he was in the Royal Welch (Welsh) Fusiliers? I would appreciate any help at all. Thank you, Sheila Graham

Hi Sheila,
With a little difference in the service number I think this is the right man:

<TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD class=medalplain colSpan=2>Medal card of Graham, Thomas</TD></TR><TR class=medalHeaderDetail><TH class=medalplain scope=col width="33%">Corps</TH><TH class=medalplain scope=col width="33%">Regiment No</TH><TH class=medalplain scope=col width="33%">Rank</TH></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD class=medalplain>Royal Welsh Fusiliers</TD><TD class=medalplain>73568</TD><TD class=medalplain>Private</TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD class=medalplain>Liverpool Regiment</TD><TD class=medalplain>113842</TD><TD class=medalplain>Private</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

It looks like the medals you no longer have were the ones he was entitled to.

I looked for pension and service records aswell on Ancestry, but could not find any. Only about 40% have survived (german bombing in the 40s).
Kind regards,
Lars

Hi Sheila.
Looked up at www.mod.uk. Apparently they they are unable to replace WW1 medals. They also recommend you try a reputable medal dealer. (There may be someone on this forum who can help with that, so keep checking in) Good luck. Gwyn.

Thanks Lars, I am so upset that I may not get copies of dads medals....apparantly though, I may be able to buy some if I am lucky.
I am intrigued Lars,...how did you find this...I have spent hours on Ancestry looking for dad, using his number...couldn't find anything. I would appreciated knowing where you looked...cheers, Sheila

Lars I did reply to this but I didn't see it appear on the site. Thank you so much for this information...How did you find it? I have searched Ancestry for hours using dads number but never got a bite.
As for pension, I am sure that dad didn't have an army pension...I know I would have heard about it from mum...they struggled financially and I am sure I would have heard about his pension if he had one.
Thanks again for your reply, it is appreciated....cheers, Sheila

Sheila,
Glad the info was of use. I'll upload his MIC from Ancestry during the weekend. I found it by using the search engine at the National Archives, that often is simpler than Ancestry's. I then typed last name Graham and corps Welsh Fusiliers, and when I saw a very similar number that was it.

From the medal card you can get a reference to a medal book, which often give the battalions the soldier served with. That has to be done by a visit to Kew, perhaps one of out members is there soon and can help out.

As to copies of the medals, I may have a surplus pair named to the RWF, I'll look and see what I can come up with if you are interested.

As to pensions, at that time they were not very high and often given for a very short period of time, if at all. So it is always worth checking these records aswell, as there might be papers even if a pension was denied.

Kind regards,
Lars

If you have no luck with the badges it may be worth trying ebay.co.uk - there is a badges section under collectables and at the moment there are about 45 listings for The Royal Welch Fusiliers.
Bit of a long shot but may be worth a look.
Good luck
