Sounds like the Allied Victory Medal Brian.

It should be impressed on the side with the recipients details. Also there should be at least one other medal to go with it.

If you can get the details we will see where we can go with finding out more about the recipient.

I see looking through this site there was a Bar struck on the GSM for South Vietnam. Can anyone enlighten me. (Rich, Al).

It is indeed a very scarce clasp for the GSM.

Only 68 were awarded to the AATTV (Australian Army Training Team Vietnam) - The reason it is scarce, is that although many Australian's served in Vietnam, a new medal was instituted (I believe in June 1968) which most of them qualified for. The dates for this service being between 29th May 1964 and 27th January 1973.

That left out the chaps that were there early doors, and hence the clasp to the GSM.

I'll dig one of my books out tomorrow for a more definitive explanation if you like.

South Vietnam 24th December 1962 - 29th May 1964

This clasp was sanctioned by Royal Warrant 8th June 1968, and authorised in the Australian Gazette 60, 1968, to Australian troops only. Qualification criteria were: 30 days active service in ships employed in operations on inland waters and/or off the coast of Vietnam., one day or more on the posted strength of a unit on land, one operational sortie, or 30 days for official visits etc. The usual concession was made regarding termination of service by death, wounds or an award of a gallantry decoration. 68 Clasps were awarded, all to members of the Australian Army Training Team. Permission was also granted to wear the South Vietnamese Government Medal with the General Service Medal.
