Help looking for Daniel Cook

I have been trying to locate my Great Great Grandfather, Daniel Cook who was born in Chorlton, Staffordshire in 1838. He does not appear on the 1861 or 1881 Census'. However, I have found him on the 1871 in barracks at Gillingham.

He is listed as a Drummer in the 23rd 2nd Foot Regiment, married and aged 31.

I wonder if anyone can give me any information about Daniel, which conflicts he might have served in from about 1860 until about 1890 and how I go about finding out more information.

I have had a quick look through the Ashantee War medal roll, the Indian Mutiny roll and also the Crimea medal roll.

I can only find reference to one Daniel Cook. I can't guarantee it is the right Daniel, but dates of birth have been know to be inaccurate on the census - but this name appears on the Crimea medal roll (1854-56), with clasp for Sevastopol. The service number is 3979.

How far along the road are you with your research ? Have you been to the National Archives yet ?

Daniel was definately born in 1838 so would have been aged 16 - 18 if it is he who is listed on the Crimea medal roll. Do you think that this is a possibility or would he have been too young?

I had absolutely no idea that he was in the Royal Welch or indeed a soldier until very recently. I found him on the 1841 and 1851 Census' as a child but could not find him again until 1891 when he had returned to North Staffs as a Potter's Labourer. On the recent publication of the 1911 Census he shows up as a 72 year old on an army pension.

I haven't yet tried the National Archives but it is now on my priority list!
