The Ardwick Boys Went To Malta

Following mobilisation in August 1939, the 8th (Ardwick) Battalion Manchester Regiment (TA) joined the BEF in France as part of 127 Brigade of 42nd (East Lancashire) Division. After taking part in the ‘phoney’ war on the French/Belgium frontier, the Ardwicks were detached and sent to Malta. Here they were reinforced by drafts from the Royal Welch Fusiliers and the Loyal Regiment to bring them up to War Establishment.
The narrative, based on diaries kept at the time, fully describes the unusual role of the battalion during the period of the 3,255 air raids of the siege. 102 pen and ink drawings & photographs made at the time by members of the battalion illustrate the many roles which the infantry had to carry out, from unloading merchant ships under air attack, to acting as armourers, bomb loaders and steamroller drivers. A fascinating account of daily life in the siege before they left to take part in the Italian campaign.

Point of spelling - Royal WelSh did not go to Malta; to early for them.

On serious note, Royal Welch have served in Malta, in the 18 hundreds and in 1914, but never during WW2, and both Bn's have stopped over in Malta enroute to Malaya (2nd Bn) and Cyprus (1st Bn).

Thanks and that counts for the war graves during WW1 that I have come across during my search. As I come across war graves for the RWF during that time but have not come across any for WW2.

thanks carl, rog. the reason for the thread is that vori101 has gone to Malta for 7 weeks and i have asked if he could take a few photos of anything pertaining to the Royal welch he comes across,they may be of use to reasearchers.....steve..

What year/s are your e mail referring to re the 2nd RWF stopping in Malta en route for Malaya. The second were due to serve in Korea in 1954, and an advance party were flown to Korea.Whilst off Korea the peace treaty was signed and the 2nd RWF were to be posted to Malaya.Another advance party flew to Singapore to make ready for the 2nd to begin their jungle training. We then joined the 26th Gurkha Infantry Brigade.I was on the "Empire Fowey that took the 2nd to Malaya, and we did not stop in Malta.So pehaps the 2nd stopped in Malta earlier than this period. But I cannot find any rerence to it. True the 2nd went to Japan after the atomic bomb was used on the Japanese mainland but they were serving in India in 1945. The 2nd R.W.F. were ordered to move to Japan on the 17th of March 1946 in H.M.T Arundel Castle.Can you please clarify the date of the 2nd stopping off in Malta.?
