I don't know how much history your regiment is taught, but this is an interesting story.

If you haven't already read this link, it's a well written account of the 23rd Foot during the American Revolution. They are highly regarded by several historical societies over here and probably the most accomplished regiment of the war.
According to the article, they travelled over nearly the entire colonial area, fought in a large number of engagements, and were here for almost the entire 8 years. Great story at the end about how they saved their colors.
It's amazing the things one learns later in life.
