Written in 1929 this is the autobiography of Robert Graves who served with the Royal Welch during WW1. Excellent description here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodbye_to_All_That
He also became good friends with Mallory who lost his life climbing Everest and thought Mallory would try for the summit even if he knew he would not be able to make it down and die.
It's an amazing book and well worth a read, further reviews here http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/product/0140274200/ref=cm_cr_dp_all_helpful?%5Fencoding=UTF8&coliid=&showViewpoints=1&colid=&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending
