jci and gwyn you have set a good question which maybe a younger member could answer? do the battalion do the BFT in boots or trainers?

I can’t speak for the Battalions as I have been a recruiter since 99. However the 1.5 run (BFT) at recruit selection is run in trainers shorts etc. However I believe I am correct in saying that applies to all. Maybe one of our 1st or 2nd Battalion serving members can give the correct answer? I am not convinced that running the BFT in a superfast time is a true indicator of a soldiers overall fitness, we all know that carrying a heavy load in difficult conditions over heavy ground on operations is a lot different to sprinting in daps.

Another debating point?

That is agreed Colin. Lucky for me, over 60 don't have to do BFTs anymore lol.

As I am over 55 I don’t have to do a BFT, but I am very old fashioned and as I am a recruiter and conducting interviews with young people on a regular basis I feel all recruiters should project the right image by looking as smart and fit as you can no matter your age. You would be amazed at the lengths we go to in helping applicants to get fit enough to pass recruit selection never mind Infantry training. We have running clubs , nurturing sessions the Army Preparation Courses. We have to go to these lengths as sadly the majority of young people are simply not fit enough, who is to blame, well that’s another debate?

Colin

The BFT is now the PFT (Personnal Fitness Test) and is done in sports kit (trainers). It comprises of Press Ups, Sit Ups and a 2.4Km (1 1/2 mile) run (in that order). Pass standards for men are:

29 and under: 44 press ups, 50 sit ups, 10.30 min run.
30-34: 41 press ups, 46 sit ups, 11 min run.
35-39: 39 press ups, 43 sit ups, 11.30 min run.
40-44: 35 press ups, 37 sit ups, 12 min run.
45-49: 29 press ups, 34 sit ups, 12.30 min run.
50-54: 25 press ups, 32 sit ups, 13.30 min run.

(A female 29 and under has to achieve 21 press ups, 50 sit ups, 13 min run).

The other mandatory fitness test is the CFT (Combat Fitness Test). For the Infantry (Regular Army) it consists of a 12.8Km (8mile) loaded march, wearing combats and carrying 25Kgs (55lbs) that includes weapon, helmet, body armour etc, and is to be completed in 2hrs.

(The CFT(TA) for the Infantry is 6.4km (4 mile) loaded march, wearing combats and carrying 25Kgs (55lbs) that includes weapon, helmet, body armour etc, and is to be completed in 1hr).

Dave,
Am i reading your quote right - Why does an under 29 female have more time to complete the run (13 min) than a male aged 49 and above.

Surely a young fit female should have the same times as her male counterparts!!

Interesting point Rog, perhaps we should debate the following:
Why is it that females have more time to complete their physical test than males, after all we now have gender free testing in the forces, and of course we are equal opportunities employers (same jobs for the same pay).

An interesting point is that if a male has gender reassignment surgery to become female then they only need to attain the female standard and likewise if a female reassigns to a male they have to attain the male standards.

The male/female thing is fair enough. We're built different, thank God!

World records for running any distance are held by men - you don't get mixed sex olympic races. (do you?)

As for the sex change thang - what's removed below is more than compensated for by what's added above!

Plus that one would probably get home so far in front of the rest, she could get a brew on and do some hoovering while they're in the shower.

The 2 miler is still done and is known as the Advanced Combat Fitness Test 1 (ACFT 1). It is an individual best effort run in assualt order carrying 20 Kg (44lbs). The pass time is 15 mins. A number of Representative Military Tasks (RMTs) are done at the end of it.

There is also a ACFT 2 which is done over two days. Day one is a 12.5 miles (20Km) loaded march carrying 30Kg (66lbs) in 3 1/2 hours. Day two is a 12.5 miles (20Km) loaded march carrying 20Kg (44lbs) in 3 hours, a number of RMTs are done at the end of it.

15 mins!!!!! To run 2 miles carrying 44lbs of kit, the old Brecon 2 miler used to be 18 mins, clearly the fitness standard are far higher now? Glad I'm out!!!!

Just to clarify.

The ACFT Dave mentioned is over a distance of 1.5 Miles.

However the true Army test is still the 2 Miler in 18 mins.
