My wife has a cup given to her by her uncle, LGS. The inscription reads"Presented to lieutenant L.G.S. by the Officers WOs NCOs and men of letter "E" company 3rd (R) Garr. Battn. Royal Welch Fusiliers on his departure from the battallion October 1918.

Why would the members of a company in October 1918 subscribe to a handsome pot to be given to a lieutenant?

What was the uncle's name - the initials LGS stand for?

I can't answer the specifics, but I believe the officer to be Lawrence George Strafford. He was educated at Dulwich College and was a member of the OTC. Commissioned Temporary 2nd Lieut (LG 11/3/17) to the 3rd Reserve Garrison Battalion and gazetted Acting Lieut (LG 1/11/17) Later promoted Temp Lieut (LG 11/8/18).

He was seconded (LG 16/10/18) to a Service Battalionn, and was wounded, then served with the regiment until he relinquished his commission (LG 25/11/19) on completion of service, retaining the rank of Lieut.

All ties in with the details.

There is also a medal card for a Strafford, Lawrence George Royal Welsh Fusiliers - Lieutenant (possibly the same person).

It shows he served with the London Regiment as Private first. Regimental number:1516
