While tracking and following my daughter’s progress on the other side of the world using the Google earth programme on the internet, I decided to take a quick flight over some of the places that were visited in my time with the 1st Bn and of course I took a flight over Monty Bks in Berlin.
I am sure Nick Ravenhill would have something to say if he could see the place now, zooming in you can visibly see that the good old Germans have gone and torn up the rugby pitch, an area of the camp that was used very often by the Bn, not just by the rugby team though, but also the football, and athletics I am sure that we even played cricket on the field aswell, Sgt’s mess against the Offs mess. Also the Asslt Pnr’s and the death slides they built and of course does anyone remember the concert held on the field, I must add it was an most outstanding stage used on the evening, designed and constructed of course by the Bn’s Asslt Pnr’s.
Anyhow to go on if you log on to and down load the Google earth program which is free of charge, you can then zoom to any part of the world just by typing in the name of the place you are looking for, you can even type in your own post code and zoom down to get an air photo of your own home, or if you want to see where someone else is living for planning routes etc or just to be nosey
The Google website is at: http://earth.google.com
Monty Bks Berlin Google Earth

So type in the following: 52°26'46.95 13° 7'18.35 (or copy and paste these co-ords) into the fly to search box and this will take you to the centre of this once proud place of the Royal Welch Fusiliers

Hi Shaun
I found the Mittelstrasse in Lemgo then I tried to remember my way back to camp following the roads, I couldn’t find the Bks, I suppose there weren’t many Welsh men who walked back to camp sober and that my excuse and keeping to it why I couldn’t find it. Still I found some old drinking holes in and around Detmold, Bad Salzuflen and Herford just to name a few, you can see the lakes to the N/East of Lemgo in the wooded area, I can remember ice skating on it in the winter and doing the company runs around it
All the best
Dai
Cant remember much about Lemgo, or Waminster or Berlin come to think about it !

I zoomed in on Monty Brks & Berlin last year & was able to show Kathryn(17 in April) were she was born (BMH) & our quarters opposite the gates of the camp.
I did put a thread on here at the time regarding Google earth & in paticular looking at Belfast were you can still visit the camp locations, especially the site of Glasmullin (Silver City) Andersontown D & B Coy's location 76-77. The site of North Howard street mill D coy 81 the buiding has gone but the site was still visable & not yet built on.
The site is great for teaching your kids geography etc.
Would like to do that with my own daughter Rich. Do you recall the address?

Hello Brian,
Do you know an ex Fusilier Tharn? I can’t remember his first name, he was a member of my platoon the Asslt Pnrs while we were stationed in Berlin, the last time I saw him was on a night out at a club called Toss ta fans (excuse my spelling) he left the platoon, Bn and was dating a German girl and stayed on in Berlin to start a new life.
If you know him and see him at any time pass on my regards to him, it would be good to see how he got on and what he is doing.
All the best

Dai,
I visited Berlin about 18 months ago and went up to the camp. Being the necky sort, I asked the German soldiers for a look around, and fair play one of them took me around the whole camp. You are right about the sports pitches, they have been dug up for drainage reasons or something. At least thats what I thought they were saying. Amazingly, all of the departments appear to be in the same place as we left them...MRS, NAAFI, Sgts Mess, Cookhouse, etc. The areas were shocking though, Nick Ravenhill would definately have a heart attack if he went to visit!!
By the way, whilst visiting the camp, I found three members of FSP Coy still hiding in the piggery from the Battalion run. I assured them that it was now safe to come out. Joey 10 from drums said..."Phew, cheers Scouse, But you cant be too careful!!"
