I'm sorry to say I don't know much about this officer. I know he was a Captain in the Indian Army before transferring to the Middlesex Regiment and then promoted temp Lt-Col.

He then went on to command the 16th Bn from July 1916 to June 1917.

I will see if I can find out more . . . .

Born 11 Nov. 1882, son of Gavin Jones and Margaret French (sister of the 1st Earl of Ypres!)
Educated Clifton College.

Appointed to Indian Army 9 Oct. 1903
Major 4 May 1916
T.Lt-Col. 11 July 1916
DSO 1 Jan. 1918 (no citation)
attached as 2/ic 2-72nd Punjabis 1919
qualified interpreter in French
DSO, 15 trio (MID), IGS Afghan 1919
Retired 1920

Became a garden architect 1922.

Married Mary Edith at Melton-on-the-Hill, Yorkshire 4 Sept. 1912.
Divorced May 1924.

The Times
died 20 May 1967 at home, The Nursery House, Letchworth. Funeral at St. Pauls church, Letchworth.

Another of my friends has just firmed up some more details for you :

In January 1908 IAL he was serving as Station Staff Officer, Ambala

Captain 4th May 1910

Went to France in Oct 1914 with the 36th Jacob's Horse and transferred to the infantry November 1915. (Scinde horse history)

Major 4 May 1916

As a Captain (IA) and Temp Major from the Middlesex Regiment he appointed to command a service Bn, RWF and to be temp Lt-Col 11th July 1916 (LG 2/10/16)

He vacated the command of a battlion of the RWF 29th June 1917 (LG 21/8/17)

MID & DSO 1 & 4 Jan. 1918 (no citation)

Posted to 2/72nd Punjabis as a Company commander & 2ic 16th October 1917 on the raising of the battalion at Kamptee in India. He serves with this regiment until he retires 2nd March 1921 and was granted the rank of Lt-Col (India Army lists Oct 1918 - July 1921).
