I have recently come across army papers for my late father and grandfather, both John Higgins, I have covered my fathers details in another post.
My Grandfather was born 21st May 1870 in Tredegar, South Wales. He Joined the South Wales Borderers 29th December 1891 and was discharged on 1st July 1904. He joined the RAMC (?) Special Reserves on 1st April 1914 and was discharged on 31st March 1919.
His SWB Army Number was 3884.
He died in 1966 and I have a newspaper cutting regarding his funeral that states he was the oldest surviving member of the 24th Regiment, had been a drummer in the battalion band and had served in India, Sudan, Egypt and Malta. His bearers were representatives of the S.W. Borderers and Old Comrades Association.
I would be very grateful for any further details of his military service. Many thanks.
