Don’t know if this has been brought up before, but when they decided on the title ROYAL WELSH, why didn’t they use the old spelling of WELCH. When the SWB and the WELCH Regiment amalgamated, they did away with any reference to the word WELCH. Don’t you think with the merging of the two battalions they could have brought Welch into the title as all regiments have now lost any reference to their original title?

Unless my memory is fading, it was because the name was too close to RWF and there had all ready been a "Welch" Regt, but it was seriously considered. As was calling all the Bn's The Royal Welsh Regiment after the TA Bn. Needless to say that wasn't warmly received by the Regular Bn's. A point in these discussions that is often missed is that actually it is the "joining" of three Regiments not two. The TA boys bring as much to the party as any one else.

Another idea discussed was the renaming of the three Bn's into:

1st Bn RWF,
2nd Bn SWB,
3rd Bn The Welch.

Going back in history with The Welch Regt origionaly a reserve Bn (a simplicifation I know apologies to Mr J Dart).

So thats why, hope it answers the question Benny.
