I have my Granddads service record from Glasgow John Robert Gibbins 4188580. It says he was in the RWF from 1928-35 and 1939-46.
From writing on photos and where he was posted we know he was in the 1st battalion. How do we find out what Company, Platoon, and Section he would have been in?

Also how many men were in the RWF during that time (I’m guessing significantly more during the war) and how many men would have been in each battalion, company, platoon, section?

thanks

Hi Ally,

I have not been in the army myself so the information is only a guess using some experince looking in to my fathers carrer in the RWF. The way I found my fathers company was through the officer commanding the company. From stories told or heard when I was child I knew his company commander. I was then lucky enough to find a story in a book of an officer marching with a platoon, knowing that a family story fitted the action the officer was taking, I was able to confirm the platoon.

A platoon is around 40 men, 3 or 4 platoons to a company and five companies to a battalion,A,B,C,D and headquarters Company. I hope this help but would bow to anyone who has actually served in the army.

Thanks Roy, yes I know about the breakdown of a regiment, sadly not knowing any names of his officers I’m unable to go further.
I was wondering if there was a record somewhere I could access. In the meantime it shall remain a mystery :)
