A shock survey has revealed that one in ten 16 to 29-year-olds think World War 2 started in the 1950s rather than 1939.
A further 12% of those polled thought the war ended in the swinging 60s, rather than in 1945, while more than a quarter (26%) believe the Allied Forces were at war with France and not Germany.
Among other worrying statistics to come out of the survey, more than a fifth of 16 to 29-year-olds (21%) are convicted the United States played no part in the conflict and only 19% of youngsters knew it was Neville Chamberlain who announced Britain was officially at war with Germany on September 3, 1939.
