Ok, this is one for the Strabane "Old Sweats"

http://rwf-forum.co.uk/gallery/files/3/keithroberts.JPGA lady from Wrexham called Roslyn, who I spoke to today on the phone, is trying to trace her older brother Keith Roberts. Keith left the family home(Brynteg Wrexham) in the early 70's and joined the regiment in about 1972 aged approx 18yrs old. Ros was a small child at the time and has little recollection of him, and it would mean a lot if she could trace him.

Her family believes Keith was based(for a period) at Strabane. He is about 6ft tall and had a distinctive tatto on his left arm(Betty Boo leaning on a lampost). Its possible that he may have settled in South Wales after he left the army. I have suggested that she should check www.192.com (http://www.192.com)

If you are able to assist please post a message, alternatively email myself or phone Ros direct on 07747 520941( Roslyn has requested that we publish her mobile no)

Many Thanks

Re Strabane we only had a pig to sleep in ...in first part of 72...only a section strong..then late in 72 they made it platoon strenght.that's how it stayed while we were in ireland.. the BN base was ebrington barracks in londonderry..& only did tours of duty in strabane..was his last two 41 ..???

Thanks for the response Tom....almost giving up hope!!

The photo supplied by the family had Strabane written on the back....We can safely say he was based in Ebrington.

Unfortunately the family do not know his army number.

I'm sure one of our members must recognise him, although I appreciate it was a long time ago...

Fingers crossed

would he be roberts 26?

If anyone does know this guy, we would obviously respect his privacy, if he does not wish to have any contact, but I think the family would want to know that he is ok.

This search was opened on 12 Dec 05 by Al Poole and the last post was in Nov 2006 by Bob Lloyd who gave a Wait out. (a radio term for I will get back to you) Unfortunatlely it would seem that he got no further. There will have been a lot more members join since then so it will be worthwhile putting up the photo again.

Original post reactivated.

ap1

What was his birth date Rosie. Sometimes you can find stuff on the net, especially if he has registered on other sites.

Also just a "Gentle Reminder" to members, if you do find him, please ensure Keiths privacy is respected, and he is contacted first before any information is posted or passed on.

ap1

Just checked Ancestry. He does NOT appear on a simple search of the Death Registrations Rosie. The list is fairly accurate, so it would indicate that he is still alive.

How do we proceed. Did he have a middle name. Also do you have any more detail on the South Wales connection. What was the definate last year he had contact with your family, and was he married at that point. This will give us a more accurate band to search.

Some suggestions:

1. If we build up enough detail we can possibly search marriage registers from 1972 onwards, or from the last known year when he was in contact with your family.

2. If we can then identify possible's and possible wifes name. Rik and Chow could possibly work their magic on 192.com, and identify some likely candidates, which you can then follow up.

Anyone else with ideas....chip in

ap1

I think Rosie, the more detailed info the better. Things that seem insignificant to yourself can make a difference to those unconnected who are searching. No problem if some of the detail is personal, if required that can be passed by private message between yourself and the members who are looking.

As an example are you in touch with Keiths brother from Plymouth? If not, tracking him might help us get closer to Keith

rosie 36
02-09-2008, 21:44
i dont au any contact with any of my family as my mum kicked me out when i was 15yrs, dont speak 2 any of my siblings. me and keith and his other brother was by a different dad 2 me, the other brother was disabled, and my mum couldnt cope so the disabled child went 2 live with his dad, the salvation army found out his name was noel after his dad. all the informatoin i have is what i au given u, i au been told things that r here say, dont know if it is true. just want 2 stress if u do find keith 2 let him know it is only me that is contacting him, i would love 2 meet him as i dont au any memories of him, rosie

Thanks for that Rosie,

I have already passed details to Rosie of a Noel Roberts from Plymouth who was born in 1929 and died in 1996. This person is very possibly Keiths father. So I would suggest looking more closely at the 3 Keith Roberts still living in the Plymouth area. Rosie mentioned South Wales, and this could be what she described as hearsay, Plymouth on the other hand is more concrete.

Rosie do you have a copy of Keiths birth Cert? You can buy them online for £7 from the GRO site at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ You would receive the copy in about 7 days.

I have identified a Keith Roberts born in Wrexham over the July period of 1953. If you dont have one, I would urge you to purchase it, as it will provide proof of Keiths date of birth. If your interested I will PM you the details of the birth cert you need to order

Interestingly, I have also found reference to a marriage between a Keith Roberts and a person with the surname Davies at Wrexham 1975. Your Keith would have been 22!!

ap1

Ok,

I would suggest applying for the Wedding Cert of the Keith Roberts who got married in 75. Im right in thinking that this will show his age at the wedding date. If this is correct...then thats another avenue open. The certs cost £7. I'm afraid tracing him will cost small sums of money, with no guarantee of success.

Also register at www.192.com This gives you access to electoral registers for this year. You then buy credits, which allow you to search specific records. Keep these credits for electoral searches, dont waste them on Marriage Certs, as I can provide that detail for you.

Equally if we can find a marriage cert, this will give us a spouses name, which then helps narrow down searches on 192. Its really a process of elimination. Clear as Mud:smile:

Do you want the 1975 marriage details.

rosie 36
03-09-2008, 12:29
oh i dont mind paying if it means finding keith, yes i do want the certificate, chow as been in touch and said he as 3 numbers in plymouth, and 51 in wales, rosie

ap1
03-09-2008, 13:06
Also Rosie, the 192 website shows that the Wrexham Electoral Roll for 2008 has 3 Keith Roberts living in the town!!

2 are aged 50-54. Keith should be 55 now.

1 other has no age listed, but lives with a Dorothy Roberts. Purchasing credits will allow you to see these individuals addresses.

As you know virtually nothing about him, I would certainly consider checking all the local options first. I heard of loads of stories in the past where missing family members were actually living in the same place as the searcher.

I would possibly look at these first before buying the marriage cert. One of these may actually be the guy who married in 75. Hope your prepared to knock some doors!!!! :-)

Just an update for members who are following this thread. Rosie is now checking out 5 possibles from Wrexham with the help of Chow. In addition, a check will also be made by Rosie on the marriage below:

Keith Roberts 1st Quarter 1975/
District-Wrexham/N
Volume - 24
Page- 0369

This particular Keith married someone with the surname "Davies". Our boy would have been 22 at the time. Incidently Ted Tudors recollection of Keith is the first solid bit of detail we have received of his RWF service. So all members of that era, we are looking for a guy who was possibly in Teds section in Strabane in 1972.

Does Roy remember where Keith was going on leave, bearing in mind he had fallen out with the family, Roy may recall if he had a girlfriend elsewhere, it may indicate where he later settled. Also the D Company picture from 75. Does Roy think Keith was still serving at that point?.

Hi Chow,

A couple of points:

1. I've spoken to Mac715. He does recall Keith. He think's he was a member of 10 Pl Deltas. As a Pioneer Mac was attached to that platoon at the Hump for a couple of months. So it may be worthwhile looking again at the 75 picture taken at McCory Park, to establish a time frame of service. Nick Ravenhill(also from Wrexham) agrees with Mac about the Deltas link.

2. Does Roz have his army number, he would most likely be known by his last two, so that may jog someones memory.

3. For Dai 72. Could you ask Michelle if she thinks the Veterans Agency would be able to assist if we had his Service Number. Cheers Dai

The problem we have is Data Protection:

As Dai as already pointed out his NI Number will locate him fairly quickly. Army Records at Glasgow will have that detail, but will not disclose it. If we could obtain that number, it is possible that the Salvation Army may be able to trace him.

Im fairly confident if we knew what area he resided we could find him by ourselves.

Chow can you check with Roz and ensure she has already tried the Sally Army, they have a formal tracing service, and charge a nominal fee. More details below:

If as Chow says that information on this site could put Keith in "Danger" (i assume that is what he is saying) this thread should be put to bed and done through another (more secure ) medium. His safety has to be the first priority.

chow
24-11-2008, 09:30
thanks Gwyn,i am certainly not saying that the info we have, would put Kieth or any other person in danger, if i thought that for a moment i wouldn't post it.certainly no more than i would put on face book or similar sites about myself. but the niva site is the only one so far that think that..i didn't leave any more info than, is and has been on this site for a couple of years,if you have a more secure medium in mind please post it.it could aid other in their searches..

I agree Chow, I think republicans have more important things on their mind, than a squaddie from 35 yrs. If their that desperate for targets they can have a whizz through facebook, at least they will have some up to date pics of RWF guys. I would pull the NIVA post if its a problem

Keep chipping away Chow

chow
25-11-2008, 10:43
Steve,
I fully understand what you are saying, but I think that there are a couple of things that I must point out to you.
1. This site is targeted by young Irish Republican dissidents, because of what it stands for. NIVA has been championing the cause of ex NI vets, from both sides of the Irish Sea, for many years, and so of course we do come in for some unwelcome attention.
2. We try to offer a safe environment for all those using the site, and so it was a policy decision from the very start, that outside the members area, (which because all users there are vetted, is secure), NO personal details are allowed to be printed. Now, it could be that your missing friend is either living, or is now in a situation, (marriage etc), where he does not wish his past service to be made public. He would hardly thank you for putting his details on an open web site.
3. I can only suggest that you contact the RBL for details. This site is, unfortunately, not geared up to locate missing friends. Sometimes old mates bump into each other on here, because of association by Regiment/Corps etc.
Dave.
this is a copy of the reply i got from dave a moderator for the NIVA site,it explains there policy on disclosure of personal info...cheers....chow

Message: I hope you do not mind me contacting you; I am currently working for RDF Television on a documentary that is looking to help reunite people with friends and loved ones they have lost touch with. We are assembling a team of expert people finders from various areas such as genealogy and private investigation who we intend to film as they try and use their expertise to track down people who have gone missing.

We are currently searching for cases which we can feature on the programme. I was searching through the ‘lost trails’ section of the Royal British Legion website and came across your entry. Brilliant new Roslyn and thanks.

Could you ask Keith if he would like to join the forum.
I know there are members who served with
Keith. I'm sure they would like to catch up with him.
And he might share with us,a little of the lost years
Cheers for now

Chow.

Ps.

So glad we didn't close it then.

Please pass on my condolences to Roz and her family Chow, its a good few years since she turned up at my house, with her only picture of Keith, her long lost brother. Its very sad that he has passed on, but I'm pleased that she did get to spend some time with him.
