View Full Version : Confused by cap badge

My grandfather William Nuttall from Shuttleworth, Lancs, enlisted in December 1915 and joined B Squadron, 3rd RR Cavalry. He served with the following regiments:
13th Royal Welch Fusiliers (from Dec 1916); 6th Dragoon Guards (July 1917) and 1st Royal Warwickshire Regt (Sept 1917)
I wonder if anyone could identify his cap badge from the shape as the lettering is unclear. The extra "fold" on the bottom of the scroll looks more like The Royal Hussars badge. I would welcome any ideas.

Hi, I believe the cap badge is that of the 3rd Dragoon Guards.

Thank you, however I don't understand why he would be wearing a 3rd Dragoon Guards badge when this regiment is not mentioned on his service records?

You did mention on your original post that he had served in (
6th Dragoon Guards (July 1917). So that is why it is the badge of the Dragoon Guards.

But it's not the 6th DG badge, Rog.

I suspect the 3rd Reserve Regt of Cavalry was spun off by 3 DG and used the 3 DG badge.

Your explanation about 3rd RR of Cavalry using 3rd DG badge makes sense (I think!) He looks so young for a man of 27 or 28 when he enlisted.

3rd Reserve Regiment of Cavalry
Formed August 1914 at Canterbury, Kent. Trained men for the 3rd and 6th Dragoon Guards, Northamptonshire Yeomanry
Surrey Yeomanry and Sussex Yeomanry. Was absorbed into new 6th Reserve Regiment early in 1917 (see below)

His records show he attested 10 12 1915 and went into Army Reserve. He was called up 13 6 1916 to Western Cavaly Depot and then posted to 3rd Dragoon Guards on 15 6 1916



edit: Having looked at the 15 6 1916 posting again I see I have interpreted what I saw as 3rd DRG whereas on reflection it's 3rd R R C for Reserve Regiment Cavalry. My previous post shows how 3rd Dragoon Guards come into play.

His Medal Roll Index Card records him as R.W.F. Private service number 55154, Dragoon Guards 21973, Royal Warwickshire Regiment 33033.

He received the Victory Medal and British War Medal.
