Printing Blocks.

A few years back i was offered a large quantity of Printing Blocks, and upon inspection on a few most were from Bangor in Wales.
The ones contained in the cross (this has been made out of timber used once from church phew ) have never been opened apart from just the centre one that being of -

21246 SGT David Hugh Hughes RWF

That block was just picked out at random unknowing about the awards .

Each individual package contains a figure unknown by myself and others, and that's where the “ Title” comes in “God only Knows”. right or wrong who knows? The remaining Blocks displayed , I tried to purchase an original printers tray but found it nearly impossible due to each compartment being exactly the same ?

So this i acquired and came up with the idea to convert an old drawer aged the timber with tea/vinegar even applied ink in parts to show accidently miss use from a period before.



And now on close inspection you wouldn't have any idea it was used for other purposes from times past . and the blocks inset look like a Ghostly effect when viewed from different angles when the light hits them and come alive looking straight back at you.

Two of the blocks amongst the collection are of Morris Griffith Pozzie and Alfred Pozzie i believe to be brothers ,looking at the display Morris is shown from the bottom left counting number 7th and Alfred is numbered 18th (wearing Australian hat).
Also amongst the group are a number of RWF.

The question I need to ask is would it be possible to find help on regards to researching each individual within the printers tray?
I have started on a few but would like more help if possible ?

I then intend to have each individuals details / research contained so that an individual can view the records along with identification showing amongst the display.

In the past I did offer to loan for a period of time both displays (as I feel others should benefit) on seeing what I have produced and only right to share.

Please I would appreciate any advice and help regarding research and or places who would like to take loan and show in the near future, these individual and special items I have created.

David Hugh Hughes 21246 was a Sergeant in 14 RWF. He embarked 01/12/1915. Having been evacuated (wounds or sickness) he was then posted to 13 RWF and was killed 22/04/1918.

Do you have a photograph of him?

If you give us the names, we shall probably be able to identify most of the men in your collection.

Both of the Pozzi brothers you mention were also casualties. That page you have in one of the photos which is leaning against a section of Bangor War Memorial is from the book Cofeb Y Dewrion. Given that the Pozzi brothers are also in that book it's fair to suspect that the blocks you have are those used to print that book. Can you confirm whether this is known to you and that you have looked for the others in that book?

Knowing this will enable us to response accordingly to your query. Most, if not all, those in Cofeb y Dewrion have been identified militarily.

Just noticed the wrapper that says James Roberts, 55 Well Street. He is another Bangor casualty who is in Cofeb Y Dewrion. Rifleman 205100 in 22nd Bn Rifle Brigade, ex 2591 in 6th RWF (and previous to that 3692 in RWF Special Reserve)

I had a feeling that I had seen these before. Should you have identified the majority as being in Cofeb Y Dewrion I would urge caution about some of the military identifications provided in the thread. Especially those attributed to South Wales men.

All of the pictures were taken from the book
Cofeb Y Dewrion (that's how I got the identification) other than that any other information regarding the RWF would have been of interest.

Above is a fine picture of the son of the late Mr. William Bulkeley and Mrs. Bulkeley 35 Tai'r Mynydd, Bangor. He joined up in August 1914 and was sent out to France before the year's end. Before long he was returned suffering from the cold and frost. He went out again at the beginning of 1916. On March 4th 1917, in a terrible battle, he fell aged 28.

<Photo> The young man, above is listed amongst the heroes of this city who fell in the great war. He was the son of Mr & Mrs David Edwards 34 Fountain Street, Bangor. He joined the 14th RWF on 4th March 1915. He went out to the battlefield and fell Feb 24 1916, his remains were buried in Baird Cottage cemetery, near Ypres, Belgium, when he was 27 years old

A North Wales Chronicle RWF casualty list dated 30/3/1917 has 55339 R Edwards, Bangor as Killed

Mr and Mrs Edwards, Fountain Street, have received information that their son Pte Dick Edwards, RWF, who played half back for Bangor reserve team, has been killed in action. His brother, Pte Hugh Edwards, who also played for Bangor, is in the fighting line.

Three of the packages I can only make out certain letters or words as the rest has disappeared over the years but, but this is what it shows / reads on each one.
