Hi there

My Grandfather was Albert Evans 1st bat. RWF and was killed in France at St.Venant near Bethune on 25th May 1940 and is buried there with other fusiliers and other regiments in the cemetery (quite a few Durham Light Infantry). There is a memorial to the Royal Welch alongside the canal about 500 yds from the cemetery. I would also appreciate any information which would piece together my Grandfathers final days He was A.E.Evans 4180444 W.O.111 (PSM)

Welcome Andy,

Work is progressing well on Volume 5 of Regimental Records, which will cover WW2. This will be published in the next year or so. Exact date to be decided. I can tell you that "Buck" Evans had served as Pioneer Sgt in both the 1st and 2nd Bns, and it looks like he was the Pioneer Platoon Sgt Major at the time of his death. His Pl Sgt, Spilstead, was killed two days previous. Have you applied for his service record?

Albert Edward Evans, Warrant Officer Class III (R.S.M.), 4180444, Royal Welch Fusiliers. Albert was the son of George and Annie Louisa Evans, of Everton, Lancashire. He married Gertrude Hitchings of Pembroke Dock in 1930. Albert served with the 1st Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers, and was in France with the BEF at the outbreak of war. Albert was killed during the retreat to Dunkirk on 25 May 1940. He was 38 years old and is buried at St. Venant Communal Cemetery, France.
