ID cards

To prevent electrol fraud they are now going to introduce additional ID to go and vote in some areas of the UK. But surely in this day and age shouldn't ID cards be introduced as a matter of course they could also be used to store national insurance numbers etc. I know about fifteen years ago this was proposed and they did on a trial basis issue some cards to certain people but was then dropped due to cost

In other countries to carry an I.D., card is a legal must. However, in this country it is deemed by many as a no no as it would infringe ones personal liberty. For myself I see no problem and have no objection in carrying some form of identity card, since throughout my working life I have had to carry a employment related identity card, which I must say has at time been very useful to confirm my identity outside working hours.

Likewise since the age of 18 always carried a ID card with me don't have any problems with doing so and I always believe that those people who say it infringes their human rights have something to hide

many times in my life i have had carry an I.D.Card. it was not a problem. and now as a resident in Malta i have a Residents I.D. Card, which until recently was good for travel through the Shengen Countries.

If the political will was there it would be possible to issue an I.D. Card, to all British subjects / citizens at a minimum cost to the tax payer. The mechanics of such an operation are already in situ.
We are issued with on birth a National Health Medical Card and at the age of 16 we are then issued with a National Insurance Number both with unique numbers which are held on record. Surely either one, both or combine the two systems could be tweaked into an I.D. Card.

I think "in this day and age" the amount of cr@p you have to carry around with you just to prove who you are, should be minimised - I don't want an extra sodding card when I already have two forms of photo ID in my driving licence and my passport. And why can't a passport be a card in this day and age anyway, instead of a book, in fact, why can't we all have a barcode implanted in our skulls - with tracking built in ??? !!

Give me one "card" that covers driving licence and passport - and that would of course cover ID - make it also a credit/debit card while you're at it.

John think you have been watching agent 47 films too much bar code on your head we will all have to walk round bald. You have a passport and a driving license not everyone has them so an ID card with all your details on is surely a good thing

A very good point. Yes it must be possible with thought to combine a number of documents which we have at present into one card. Though I see problems with the credit / debit card idea from the financial institutions accepting the idea.

chip and a barcode are two different things putting a chip in you good idea

I know chips and barcodes are different - I'm just making the point that in this day and age, if it was an issue, ID could be done digitally but it's not an issue in every day life. I don't remember the last time, bar leaving and entering the country, that I had to show photo ID since I left the army and needed my ID card to enter military bases and the last time photo ID was offered to me was by one of those scumbags pretending to be disabled selling shoddy goods from a holdall at ridiculous prices.

Agree with what you say regarding showing of ID likewise last time I showed any photo ID is leaving and arriving back into countries however we now live in a less secure world and to carry some form of ID is a must and as welchboy said everything can be included on these cards except credit card details.Its even things like accessing NHS services you have a card that you can swipe and it says if you can access these services.Anyway have a happy new year
