Come on guys I can see a few Signallers from the Honiton days on here, remember those radio exercises on Farringdon Common with A13s, sloping wires and dipole antenna jobs and giving the Marine recruits [Lympston] a hard time as they 'Yomped' past, being 'beasted' by their DS, all carrying full CEMO or gigantic bergans. Waiting for our DS to drop off 'haverbags' and the urn of tea [normally dried out cheese sandwiches covered in dust]? what about trekking up the A375 behind camp for miles to do section battle drills on the common Opposite the 'Hare and Hounds' [good ploughmans lunch there afterwards although we had to pay ourselves] Happy days.

Any one from the Sigs Platoon in Honiton remember the telephone exchange in BNHQ near the CO,s office, all the Signallers did 'stags' on there from time to time, [althought I remembers spending quite a long time on there myself]? 60/2 Line PABX, 60 internal lines and two external, the operator would 'patch' extension to extension and extension to and from outside numbers. The outside lines would be patched through to the guardroom and officers mess at 1800 Hours and taken back when the Signaller came on duty at 0800 the next Morning. Lots of people from the internal extensions would try it on to get an outside line, for which general access was restricted with some wonderful excuses. When the exchange closed at night you would rush out and try and get across the drill square to your 'Basha' before the duty bugler blew last post when we all had to stand still. great huh?

Remember doing Duty Clerk from the Orderly Room and getting a rest in the COs Office in the winter, only form of heating, was in this office. Panic if the phone rang. 12

Further to this if there was a power cut there was a handy little handle that could be turned at a constant speed that would supply power from the bult in generator, obviously you would need a third arm to do this and contiue to operate the exchange :skeptical:. Cant remember but there also may have been secondary batteries behind the footwell, although I dont remember any battery maintainence ever being done, it may have been down to the GPO to do this as it was their kit.

You should have seen the hut signs for; Recce, Drums and Morter's, you could have had some fun with making up names with those...
