I am researching my Father's army career, which spanned 1932 to 1968 in the Royal Artillery, and I hope that someone can help me with the period 2nd October 1961 to 21st August 1962 which he spent in Wrexham.
He was a Major (QM), and had just completed a tour as the QM of an RA TA Regiment in Inverness.
His service record gives his next posting as "Western Command Regimental Pay Office (Infantry) Wrexham" but does not give his actual position. He was definitely in Wrexham, and lived in married quarters close to the barracks.
His posting following Inverness was supposed to be to 372 (Flintshire and Denbighshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment RA (TA) in Prestatyn, but I understand that there was a delay, and he was sent to Wrexham until the Prestatyn posting was ready.
This Regiment only came into being on 4th October 1961, and originated when 361 (Carnarvon and Denbigh Yeomanry) Medium Regiment RA (TA) was amalgamated with 384 Light Regiment RA (Royal Welch Fusiliers) TA.
I would like to find out what he was doing in Wrexham, and I can think of 2 possibilities:
1. He really was posted to the RPO. As a Gunner, he knew nothing about pay, but he was an experienced Adjutant and Quartermaster. Perhaps he filled one of those positions, or some other
administrative position.
2. The posting to the RPO was for administrative purposes only, and he was actually involved in organising the new Regiment, which came into being at the exact time he arrived in Wrexham.
Perhaps there was a TA connection in Wrexham.
Can anyone help me to understand what my Father was doing in Wrexham in 1961/62? Does anyone know how large the RPO was, and when it left Wrexham?
Any help would be gratefully received.
Michael
