Have they considered applying for a copy of his service records? These will reveal his battalion(s), medal entitlements and postings overseas etc.
The number points to a 1942 enlistment, but as suggested it is best to apply for his service record.

Benny - The only place where you'll find out his battalion 100% is in his service records, he may have even changed Bns during the war, many changed units as the war progressed. Once you know the Bn you can start looking at that specific unit, each Bn had a war diary which gives a day by day account of what they were doing and where. There are also published accounts by way of books but again, you need to know the battalion first before you go down either road.
Cheers
