I hope someone can help us with this and perhaps the family of a fusilier too.

After the fighting around Wintelre and Vessem in WW2 a St James bible was found in a field by a local farmer. The farmer's family passed this to our local historical society recently and as it is heavily annotated and contains slips of paper of a personal nature we would like to return it to the family if possible as it does seem to be a family bible that a soldier or chaplain was carrying with them. The name of James Finley is mentioned on one slip of paper and we know that James was a mission leader in Romford, Essex who died in 1906. The town of Eastbourne is also mentioned.

The bible is black, leather bound, and heavy. It must have been very special to the owner to have been carried in the field and perhaps this rings a bell somewhere with someone. We would be grateful for any contact on this issue and on the events of the liberation - we are organising remembrance activities in this area for September. Some veterans used to visit us regularly with their families until a few years ago but unfortunately the matter of the bible did not come up.
