Death of Lt Col Richard Sinnett

It is my sad duty to inform you that Lt Colonel RJM Sinnett died today. He had been quite unwell for the last five months.

Colonel Richard was unique in the Regiment in that he was the Regiment's chronicler. He habitually collected data and facts about the Regiment and was a major contributor to the books written about the Regiment by many authors. He has been an invaluable asset to us all and we are all the wiser for his detailed and accurate research about the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He Commanded the Welsh Depot Crickhowell in the early 70s.

As Regimental Secretary he was always available to provide details of individual officers who had served and wrote many of the officers obituaries that appeared in Y Ddraig Goch. I have every reason to be very grateful for his help and support over the years.

So sad to hear this Bob. Over the last 13yrs he quietly supported the research work on the Forum, often providing me with his own research papers in order to assist us. A real gentleman and a sad loss to the regiment. Deepest sympathy to his family.

Hello all,
My sincere condolences go out to all Colonel Sinnett's immediate family and friends. Richard was a tireless worker on behalf of the Royal Welch Fusiliers,Whilst in the west indies and whilst holding the post of Intelligence Officer.
And his 1st task was overseeing the "Invasion " of Grenada. He worked hand in glove with "B" Company Commander Major the Lord Wynford. The upshot was about 98 men of "B" Company had to be sent to Grenada to stop the rioting and intimidation that was prevalent on the island. The man mainly responsible was Eric Gairy who stirred up trouble over the wages paid the local populace. "B" Company were flown to Grenada and bussed down to the capital Saint George's now that was frightening but not much else was.Richard was also engaged on the 3 power conference held in Bermuda (President Eisenhower Winston Spencer Churchill and President Laniel of France) During the time we served in the W I the battalion had trouble in Antigua and British Guiana. All of which Richard worked tirelessly to make sure every thing ran smoothly. Which he did with consummate skill and diligence. Major The Lord Wynford left to act as A.D.C to General Templar fairly soon after the Grenada incident. on leaving the Army Richard has worked on the History of W.W.2 and more work is left to be finished.Rest in Peace kind sir.

I first met Col.Richard Sinnet when we both trooped out together on the dreaded Skyways trip to Jamaica,via Iceland,Newfound,and Bermuda.
in1952. It was on that Flight when an engine caught fire twice that his coolness calmed and reassured everyone on board.

In 1953 I served with him as part of a Close protection team of three NCO'S under the Command of Lt.Col Warren Whittaker at the Bermuda
Conference.We were organised by the then Captain Sinnett in our duties for the protection of those taking part.Winston Churchill,President
Eisenhower,Anthony Eden,President Laniel of France,plus their entourage.In this Captain Sinnett was in his Element.He could charm the
birds off the trees.

We had stayed in touch over the last 60years,over good times and bad for the both of us.He was both a friend and Confidant. An Officer
and a Gentleman. I was proud to serve under him.

Col Sinnett was my C.O. when I was in J/S Company at Crickhowell 70/72.

Always took the time to speak to you if he was out and about. A true gentleman.

Very sad news indeed, Bob. We corresponded over a period of at least ten years and I always found Richard a courteous and helpful fellow historian and friend. I shall miss him.
